Which natural disaster are you afraid of the most?

BlueVeins · 22-25
Probably a CME. I live in a region that can't be easily hit by tornados, geological activity, or hurricanes, but CMEs can strike anywhere and take out the power for months. If one hits, things will get really bad really fast.

@BlueVeins You need to read about the 1859 one. It was strong enough to create it's own electricity and burnt out many telegraph systems. Others were able to be used without being connected to power. A CME of that size hitting us today would blow out every transformer world wide whether of not it was connected to anything. Transformers take about 9 months to build just one, which is why it would take about 30 years to replace them all even with every facility producing them as fast as could be.

@UckfayOuyayOotay A transformer is a much more powerful and elegant machine than a telegraph -- they're designed to deal with gigantic electric currents.

@BlueVeins They are. But not on that level.
Wildfires 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. Terribly destructive and hard to control.
@cherokeepatti Two years ago, one started about one or two miles away from where I live. It was morbidly interesting how fast they can run. Since it was on the other side of a four lane road, it came close but didn’t cross over. [c=#BF0000]SCARY[/c]

@CereBellum we had a lot of wild fires in the past decade. The record heat waves with record droughts in 2011 and 2012 turned the landscape brown. Most of them were in rural areas but one crossed over the highway and got to an apartment complex and did some destruction. When the winds are high like they were that day anything can happen with them. Could have been a lot of lives and homes lost.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@CereBellum I was driving home from Oklahoma City and passed by about 10 fires on one side of the road. A couple had driven down the road in a vehicle with the muffler dragging and started them.

I'm not really scared of any of them. My house is able to withstand all but the strongest earthquakes, I'm 103 feet above seal level so tsunamis aren't a real threat, and we don't get tornadoes, snow storms or hurricanes here. Beyond that any that would effect here will also effect the globe...global climate change, rogue black hole, coronal mass ejections on the level of the 1859 solar storm, etc.

This will be a popular choice...SOCIALISM!!!!
(sorry...)

Tornados. You can shovel snow, pump water out of your basement, stay away from windows with bad lightening storms, but you can't control those hoses that swirl out of the skies.
curiosi · 61-69, F
Earth quakes, they come on suddenly without warning.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@curiosi last one I felt here I was sleeping and it rolled me to the end of the bed.
curiosi · 61-69, F
@cherokeepatti I have only been through one, it was barley a rumble. Didn't even know what it was til I heard about it later. Like to keep it that way.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@curiosi Each one was different. The first one was centered about 5 miles from my house...there was a loud boom, then a few seconds later the house shook like a giant had ahold of it. The second one lasted a long time and was a rolling earthquake...the third hit while I was asleep...all of them unnerved me for the better part of the day. Plus dozens of tiny ones that made a whoosh sound and scared the birds.

I can handle earthquakes, landslides, tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, tsunamis, avalanches and even super volcanoes or asteroid strikes. But if we have a global internet outage, there will be pandemonium.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Tornadoes, but earthquakes are right up there, we’ve had 3 that shook me up for awhile.
