Probably a CME. I live in a region that can't be easily hit by tornados, geological activity, or hurricanes, but CMEs can strike anywhere and take out the power for months. If one hits, things will get really bad really fast.

@BlueVeins A CME on the level of the 1859 one will kill the power grid globally, and will take a minimum of 30 years to fix. And CMEs of that size happen more often than we think...the last one was 2012, and only didn't effect us because we weren't in the right place to get hit.

@UckfayOuyayOotay It is unlikely though, for them to actually knock out the power grid for that long because we can just shut off the power grids if we see 'em in advance. Still scary though.

@BlueVeins You need to read about the 1859 one. It was strong enough to create it's own electricity and burnt out many telegraph systems. Others were able to be used without being connected to power. A CME of that size hitting us today would blow out every transformer world wide whether of not it was connected to anything. Transformers take about 9 months to build just one, which is why it would take about 30 years to replace them all even with every facility producing them as fast as could be.

@UckfayOuyayOotay A transformer is a much more powerful and elegant machine than a telegraph -- they're designed to deal with gigantic electric currents.

@BlueVeins They are. But not on that level.
