Aside from insulting an ally and losing the respect of the world, Trump achieved nothing.

@AdmiralPrune They care because it's their country, not the American president's, but it was a peculiar thing His Nibs said: if the USA doesn't build bases there, China and Russia will. I've no idea if he meant that, or if it was purely as propaganda.

Building a base in an ally's country as part of a pact is one thing.

For China or Russia to do, would be invasion and there is no evidence of such intention. Besides Russia itself is far closer to US territory - Alaska, oil-bearing and once Russian territory at that - than any part of Greenland.

I wonder just what sort of bases Mr. Trump wants there, even? The USA already has an air base - reportedly built at the ruthless cost of giving local villlagers just days to pack up and abandon their homes. An army garrison won't be much use there. A navy base would be extremely costly and take some years to build.

I have a sneaking fear the supposed base (two bases, even?) might be fronts for US minerals companies to use them and to hell with the Greenlanders and Danes - and the island's environment. Companies such as so-called "Greenland Energy", whose owners include a certain Mr. Donald Trump; and which has equipment illegally landed on the island

Another reported aspect worrying me is that the "deal" gives the US permanent control of Greenland's security. Why? What if at some point the USA outstays its welcome for some reason?
