Could be a number of things. Perhaps I sympathize with them because I see something of myself in them and consider them kindred spirits. Perhaps I think they have a noble soul. Maybe I think they could just use a break (I have a thing for people down on their luck). And then I might well be attracted to them and just be unable to do otherwise.

This feeling is usually triggered when you see them in some pain or suffering. May be because you understand the pain and suffering and don't want them to go through the same.
