What is it about people that would make you want to make an effort for them, sometimes even if they did not make the same effort for you?

What about them makes you like them to that extent?

Could be a number of things. Perhaps I sympathize with them because I see something of myself in them and consider them kindred spirits. Perhaps I think they have a noble soul. Maybe I think they could just use a break (I have a thing for people down on their luck). And then I might well be attracted to them and just be unable to do otherwise.
