I have quite few nicknames so I don't feel much connection to my given name. I do accept my name despite feeling a bit off telling new people my name, just doesn't feel very me when I give my name, almost feels like I'm lying honestly lol
Aidan · 31-35, F
@Beguiling yeah I can relate to that

Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F

Not at all. The name is the last thing that comes to my mind when I look at myself. I'm so disconnected from it that I feel weird even filling out forms. It's only a thing other people need to identify me, I don't need a name for myself, lol.

Yet I'm so used to people calling me like that that I couldn't change it without changing my life in a major way first.

It would be actually nice. Let's leave the old name stuck to all the negative habits and patterns I adopted and keep saying: " this is what would **** do, you're [some other name] now. "

@CrazyMusicLover Aren’t you given two names at birth ? Both my parents used there second name and even one of my grans 😅.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@Yourbeau No. Some parents give their kids two names but it's rare. My cousin has two but only uses one. All it caused was confusion how should family members call her while she was growing up because someone preferred one, someone the other until she was old enough to pick the preferred name herself. If you hear that people have a second name here they usually mean their confirmation name. But I'm not religious so I didn't even know it was a thing until later. And of course, I don't have one.
Yourbeau · M
@CrazyMusicLover Catholics here have three, an extra one for confirmation.
I was given a nick name in kindergarten and that’s what most people called by 💁‍♂
It's a name... I'm connected to it, but like, they could of given me a different name (and they almost did as they were split between two)...

But I feel like you can call yourself most names, or whatever you want to be called, unless society rejects it
Yes and no. I say "yes" only because I've learned to accept it, but it never felt like "me." I've always wanted to change it.
Notsimilarreally · 31-35, F
Yes

Physical aesthetic is weird though like another user said, just think it's a disconnect from body idk 🤷🏻‍♀
Absolutely.

It's always been very me.
So me in fact... that i rarely ever gotta nick name that stuck around very long.

I love it. Wouldn't ever want another.
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
Well I am called Ken and after I get passed the Barbie comments it's all I have known and I am ok with it.
itsok · 31-35, F
Yes and no. I feel connected to my name, but not to my physical appearance at all.
SwampFlower · 31-35, F
@itsok so much this for me. I have never been able to really put words to it.
SammyJo · 51-55, F
I s'pose so. 55 years, duck. I've looked in that mirror and said "Hi Samantha" so I'd say so, yes.

SJD x
I don't see myself in the mirror.

Ooooo! Gotta go.
I have to be back in my coffin before sunrise. 🦇
Kiesel · 56-60, M
FreestyleArt · 36-40, M
Nah I rather not. I feel invisible that way
wackidywack · 26-30
absolutely. i like it about myself
looking at myself in the mirror doesn't make me think of my name at all

and I never really think about my given name, it's relatively meaningless to me, it's just something to help others identity me as distinct from addressing someone else
BrandNewMan · 61-69, M
I suppose .. though not something I'd thought about tbh
No, I disowned that name
Aidan · 31-35, F
@HootyTheNightOwl So you changed your given name?

I changed mine well not legally not yet but even then I don’t really feel connected to my names either given or chosen.
@Aidan No, my family members insist that they would just deadname me if I change my name.

So I will be cutting them off soon enough.
Monalisasmith86 · 36-40, F
