@Emarky The decision not to do such a thing would have been nearly impossible for Truman who had been in the office for a very short period of time and was dealing with FDR's tremendous shadow. After the Japanese defense of Okinawa an invasion of the Japanese homeland would have caused tens of thousands of American casualties. Given the destruction of so many Japanese cities already, it was actually closer to a no-brainer.
