My son graduated from high school last night.

I’m so proud of him! He has characteristics of ADHD & autism, but he’s done really well in school, not to mention working at McDonald’s the past year. He got 2 awards for maintaining over a 4.0 GPA all four years in high school since he took advanced placement courses.

He’s going away for school in September, and I will be an emotional wreck I’m sure. It will be a huge learning and growing experience for him, and he needs it. But I will miss my baby since I’ve been with him every step of the way since he was born over 18 years ago. ❤️

NCCindy · 36-40, F
You also need to pat yourself on the back for being an awesome Mom who guided him to this day.
marsbar · F
@NCCindy @Wol62 Thank you :) He still has a lot to learn & growing up to do, but I’m proud of his accomplishments & how he is so far.
RedBaron · M
@marsbar Of course. College students being supported by parents are still children, but it’s a huge step and an amazing experience.

Sounds like he's heading in the right direction so far...👍
marsbar · F
@Tminus6453 Yes. Thank you

Yay! That is awesome!

Wow, such an awesome record. And having a job, too!

I hope he has fun in college and learns some awesome knowledge and skills.

I was so bored the other day so started reading my high school calculus textbook. My perspective and background are so different now.

I can see why they chose to present it as they did, because I know a lot of what comes next and even the higher math that underpins it. For example, one theorem was left unproven. But when I got to college I took a course where it was proven.

Yet it is still hard. Especially when I look at the exercises at the end of each chapter, specifically, the last few of those on the list for the chapter.

I am also watching a Stanford lecture on YouTube about general relativity. The last one discussed black holes!
marsbar · F
@JoyfulSilence Omg you love math! And thank you 😇
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@marsbar

I swear sometimes thinking about math keeps me up half the night.

I sometimes think of math while falling asleep. It is weird, since I will try to visualize and work on an equation in my head, yet this gets hard as I move in and out of wakefulness. If I do nod off for a second there is a gap in my memory and I forget what I was working on that moment. But often not enough of a gap to forget what I had been doing, in general. Yet I can only resume it from a point in the past.
marsbar · F
@JoyfulSilence Oh wow! 😅
Heartlander · 80-89, M
WOW!! Congratulations to both your son and to you.

The "going away" part is a huge step. Can you also get registered at the same school so you can also attend and watch his progress?
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@marsbar

:) that was intended to be semi-humorous ... and knowledge a wish to go with them, even if just to sit at a distance and watch.

For a while it was called the "hover generation", meaning that parents were hovering over children like helicopters, ready to advise and protect their children as they went through college. Has that generation come ... and gone?
marsbar · F
@Heartlander I think for the most part, yes, parents tend to hover less now.
RedBaron · M
@Heartlander No. As far as I know, though I myself am not a parent, they do that today as much as ever.
UpForItNow · 22-25, F
That's great. I have Asperger's and I managed to get a postgraduate degree, 26-year government career to senior management level, get married, have kids, own my home, travel the world, and have many lovers. I still revel in my extreme differences.
marsbar · F
@UpForItNow That’s awesome! 😊
Well, congratulations to him, to you, and to all who helped make this happen.

With his characteristics, getting him through this means the whole village rejoices in his accomplishment!
marsbar · F
@SomeMichGuy Thank you 😊

marsbar · F
@Wol62 I’ve been teaching my kids to be kind to others since they were toddlers, as well as having good morals & values. Now he’ll be on his own, so I hope he can continue to grow & learn from what we’ve taught him.

marsbar · F
@darkknightt My ex is a good dad, so the kids have both our support & love.
@marsbar I was referring to you, I wish that you do get a loving, caring and kind partner for yourself. Who would fulfil your needs and passion.
marsbar · F
@darkknightt Thank you. I hope so too.
RedBaron · M
Terrific! Where is he headed for college? As an aside, I graduated college 40 years ago this weekend and remember it like yesterday!
marsbar · F
@RedBaron I don’t want to say, but and he will be at a college that’s about an hour and a half from us, so at least he’s still close enough to get to if we really need to get to him quickly.
monte3 · 70-79, M
Congratulations to you both!
