Her appearance.
It was yesterday. She was the loans officer at our local credit union.

I hate saying that it was her appearance - but it couldn't be anything else.
I saw her before I heard her voice or knew anything else about her.

She was white, middle-aged, and very overweight with the kind of barrel shape typical of asthmatics who take a preventative drug that has that side-effect. She wore the Credit Union's uniform, which meant little opportunity to express herself. She wore far too much make-up - a plastered mask like an opera singer on stage. My instantaneous reaction was repugnance. But it didn't last long.

She soon proved to be highly experienced, intelligent and very good at her job.

By the end of the meeting, I'd realised that we were better off if we didn't apply for the loan. The interest of 5.69% p.a. would have been more than we could afford.
