Why does society have expectations?

Society doesn't have expectations. People have expectations, which is natural. Helps us survive, procreate, not get in trouble. But those expectations/standards can hurt people that don't fit in to that ideal.

They want to fulfil through you to cover what they didn't do for themselves.

How else is it going to maintain a modicum of control over its members?

I don't think society does have expectations. The individuals who compose society do.

We are creatures of habit. When people do unexpected things, it’s disorienting

Expectations is for losers do as you please!!!

People set the standards, and we're stupid enough to expect people to reach up to it.
