do you also feel insignificant on your birthday? why?

4meAndyou · F
Oh yeah. It started when I was little. We were always traveling on my birthday. If I was lucky we stopped at a roadside picnic table and my mother had a little cake for me and a present.

Later when I was older I wanted to stay home on my birthday, not travel 2000 miles (after my steady bf cheated on me during the summer with my best friend).

My mother decided she would go out west without me so she could be with my grandfather on HIS birthday (because he might die someday). So she left me a couple of presents and just took off. She spent more money on me to try to make up for not being there, but it didn't make any difference. I was actually jealous of my own grandfather.

So every year I struggle with it. If someone doesn't make a big fuss over me I feel abandoned. If she hadn't normally completely lacked the ability to display affection, and if she hadn't been abusive, I would have been able to add those pluses to the big minus.

Ive never cared about it. Kids used to say that i was unfortunate to not be celebrating it, but nowadays as we age I hear more about people who are absolutely depressed over their birthdays. It's better this way :P
