The other day I asked ex very seriously, what is it that makes people dislike me?

His answers in order:

1. "Your intelligence is intimidating."
2. "You decide what other people are thinking and won't believe it when they tell you otherwise."
3. "You don't fit in out here." (meaning Arizona and the west in general)

I don't agree with the first one.
I can sort of agree with the second one.
I fully believe the third one.

If your intelligence is intimidating that doesn’t say much about his. I think that your perception is very acute, and you recognize when things don’t feel right. You may not fit in there, just like I didn’t fit in on the east coast.
