What has equality to do with enslavement?

Slavery is slavery, be it in Roman Empire or the Americas.

Why stop there slavery still exists. Everybody's b******* about slavery. From the past, but those same people won't do one thing to stop the slavery of today.

Because being enslaved by definition means you have less rights and liberties than a free person, thus not equal legally and socially?

Also, the Transatlantic Slavery system differed quite a bit from previous forms of slavery. In other forms of slavery, slaves had rights, it wasn't based on the colour of their skin, they could work to freedom, and their children weren't considered property.

You're welcome.

@basilfawlty89 What rights did they have? How often did they win a taste of freedom? How many of their children escaped enslavement?

I know the answer. Let's see if you do.

@yestestvennaya in which system of slavery and if not the Transatlantic Slave Trade, which empire?
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
I don't think anyone alive today has had opportunities denied to them because the Romans enslaved their ancestors.

@CountScrofula Atlantic slave trade was also not intended to be about race. This was a concomitant, a culture that emerged during, not prior to, their enslavement. The initial reasoning was immediate and practical. Sub-Saharan Africa had the chattel, and the Arabs and Whites purchased and moved that chattel. The Arabs would castrate black men. All nations have had slaves. The word “slave” originates from “Slav.” Many Slavs were enslaved. Mostly by Arabs.

Romans had ideas about different peoples. Blacks were more of a curiosity than a species to put down. It does not mean Romans were free of prejudice. But what does it matter?

What sub-Saharan African slave owners owning Germanic men in Roman Empire do you know of? What you say is theoretical possibility. Not reality. As for the so-called social issues existing in the modern day, I can't comment. I am no social theorist or social justice advocate.

@yestestvennaya You're completely and utterly missing the point.

Slavery has been practiced by humanity for most of its history and is now uncommon but certainly takes place. Yes, Slavs were popular targets for slavers in the middle ages. What is the modern impact of that?

The entire reason the Atlantic slave trade is different is that it was explicitly about kidnapping and enslaving black Africans. Those black Africans were relocated en masse to the Americas, and their descendants have a harder time than the descendants of the slavers. It's a modern problem. That's why we talk about racial inequality.

@CountScrofula We will wait a century or two. People will then say the same about African slaves in US. What is the “modern impact?”

“The entire reason the Atlantic slave trade is different is that it was explicitly about kidnapping and enslaving black Africans.”

They were sold because they were chattel. When you are made chattel, they can do with you what they please. The prejudice you speak of came after.

“Those black Africans were relocated en masse to the Americas,”

Yes. This tends to happen when you are chattel and they move you. We were all driven out by someone. Or sold.

“and their descendants have a harder time than the descendants of the slavers. It's a modern problem. That's why we talk about racial inequality.”

Garbage. Wrong. There are descendents of slavery suffering in USA. Have you not heard of white trash? In the south, they were made destitute. Their economy depended on slavery. That is the south. There are other impoverished white folk in US. There are poor blacks and there are poor whites. Your excuses are going to run dry.
TurtlePink · 22-25, F
There is some type of inequality going on in the us today that leads to systematic racism. Especially towards Black Americans. Because why else would trump supporters claim that it was trump and not Biden who fixed the economy to help Black families afford groceries?

If trump has to fix the economy specifically for Black people, it kind of sounds like there must’ve been some type of systematic stuff going on lol

I doubt that's true, as culture and era will have their impact.

@yestestvennaya I explained it above. You chose to simply ignore it. Ignoring relevant facts to fit your worldview is not being historical, its being ahistorical for ideology.
yestestvennaya · 22-25, F
@basilfawlty89 Read my response.

@basilfawlty89

I have no worldview.
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
@yestestvennaya except yoi defend AfD, Trump, etc. Some would label that National Conservativism if not suppprt for fascism.
yestestvennaya · 22-25, F
@basilfawlty89 I support nationalism. You can call it fascism if you wish. Germany should be Germany and that Tunisia should be Tunisia. The latter was once Christian, but it is now Muslim. The planet is diverse. Nations are not diverse, nor should they be. If South Africa wants to be black again, maybe they should. Diversity is a sham.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@yestestvennaya I hate to break it to you but that's a worldview.

Isn't slavery the opposite of equal rights?
Slavery is the antithesis to equality
What does inequality have to do with evil?
LolZ.
Yup nuh huh!
Evil is our only choice!
