Because being enslaved by definition means you have less rights and liberties than a free person, thus not equal legally and socially?
Also, the Transatlantic Slavery system differed quite a bit from previous forms of slavery. In other forms of slavery, slaves had rights, it wasn't based on the colour of their skin, they could work to freedom, and their children weren't considered property.
