I don't think anyone alive today has had opportunities denied to them because the Romans enslaved their ancestors.

@yestestvennaya You post an argument, be prepared for people to argue with it.
Roman slave economies were not based around race. There was no "racial equality" because race was not a concept. They just enslaved whomever they could get. Entirely possible for a black Roman (which yes, they existed) to enslave white Germanic people and for it to be normal.
The Atlantic slave trade was specifically enslaving Africans. To this day, the descendants of those slaves are in a socially worse position than the descendants of the slavers. So it is a modern problem to solve.

@CountScrofula Atlantic slave trade was also not intended to be about race. This was a concomitant, a culture that emerged during, not prior to, their enslavement. The initial reasoning was immediate and practical. Sub-Saharan Africa had the chattel, and the Arabs and Whites purchased and moved that chattel. The Arabs would castrate black men. All nations have had slaves. The word “slave” originates from “Slav.” Many Slavs were enslaved. Mostly by Arabs.
Romans had ideas about different peoples. Blacks were more of a curiosity than a species to put down. It does not mean Romans were free of prejudice. But what does it matter?
What sub-Saharan African slave owners owning Germanic men in Roman Empire do you know of? What you say is theoretical possibility. Not reality. As for the so-called social issues existing in the modern day, I can't comment. I am no social theorist or social justice advocate.

@yestestvennaya You're completely and utterly missing the point.
Slavery has been practiced by humanity for most of its history and is now uncommon but certainly takes place. Yes, Slavs were popular targets for slavers in the middle ages. What is the modern impact of that?
The entire reason the Atlantic slave trade is different is that it was explicitly about kidnapping and enslaving black Africans. Those black Africans were relocated en masse to the Americas, and their descendants have a harder time than the descendants of the slavers. It's a modern problem. That's why we talk about racial inequality.

@CountScrofula We will wait a century or two. People will then say the same about African slaves in US. What is the “modern impact?”
“The entire reason the Atlantic slave trade is different is that it was explicitly about kidnapping and enslaving black Africans.”
They were sold because they were chattel. When you are made chattel, they can do with you what they please. The prejudice you speak of came after.
“Those black Africans were relocated en masse to the Americas,”
Yes. This tends to happen when you are chattel and they move you. We were all driven out by someone. Or sold.
“and their descendants have a harder time than the descendants of the slavers. It's a modern problem. That's why we talk about racial inequality.”
Garbage. Wrong. There are descendents of slavery suffering in USA. Have you not heard of white trash? In the south, they were made destitute. Their economy depended on slavery. That is the south. There are other impoverished white folk in US. There are poor blacks and there are poor whites. Your excuses are going to run dry.
