"How are you" is a politeness, and no answer other than "fine" is needed or wanted.
NerdyPotato · M
@DunningKruger neurotypicals are so weird...
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
@NerdyPotato I know, right?
SaorUladh · 31-35, M
Where I live, some people use the words "how are you?" as a general greeting instead of hello, good morning, et cetera.
They aren't expecting a response that answers the question. It's not that they're being rude, it's just a very peculiar colloquialism.
That might not be the case where you are but I thought it was worth mentioning.

@SaorUladh that’s how it is in the US too
Enonnannej · 46-50, F
@SaorUladh i know what how are you means. I also understand its just a thing to do to be nice. But we are friends and i havent talked to her in a while. And we both have physical issues sooo i really wanted to answer the question without her being that way.
JonUK41 · 36-40, M
@TurtlePink In the UK too. When you meet somebody it's normal for older people to shake hands and say "how do you do?" This is not actually a question or an enquiry as to their wellbeing
I really don’t see it as being rude, you just seem to have two different ways of looking at the question “how are you?”
If you’re wanting to have an actual discussion, probably better to let her know that it’s been awhile and you’d love to catch up and talk.

Where I’m from “how you doing” is a common greeting that is more of a statement than a question

It's a long way of saying, "hi". That's all... They really don't want a detailed description of your health and emotional status.
NerdyPotato · M
That seems to be the American way of politeness.
TurtlePink · 22-25, F
@NerdyPotato 💀💀💀 we are very odd 😅
Enonnannej · 46-50, F
@NerdyPotato true but i am friends with her and its been awhile since we caught up
NerdyPotato · M
@Enonnannej in that case it's a bit weird indeed 🤔
Firestarter · 31-35, F
Next time she asks you, tell her about herself.
Enonnannej · 46-50, F
@Firestarter lol true
masterofyou · 70-79, M
Then it could be like just waving hello as she's walking by ...
Pinkstarburst · F
When passing someone, “How are you?” is a statement of acknowledgement, not a question about your well being.
masterofyou · 70-79, M
Idk. But it's very strange 😕
It means they don't care they just want to give the appearance that they care
Enonnannej · 46-50, F

they hate you
RedBaron · M
It means she has approximately zero flucks to give you.
