@Vivaci The speculation is that he tried to fly over the barbed wire that surrounds the pool area, but couldn't fly high enough in his weakened state. The area doesn't get much wild fauna, but it's not impossible that it accidentally frightened a squirrel or something. There's also a cat that lives nearby, but it's very shy and I don't think it would've walked close enough to the front of the pool during opening hours to kill this duck.
I had to stop my car today because the entire road was full of a herd of geese. I honked many times and inched forward, and they slowly split in two and I snuck between them.
