Why in the world are they getting rid of pennies!

Reminds me of a joke I heard in high school..

So ( insert friends name)…, what’s your mom gunna do for work now they scrapped 1c-2c coins…

They have talked about doing away with pennies for decades. They want a cashless society because they can't trace cash. Tax reasons, illegal activity are a couple of reasons.

A combination of inflation meaning they are worth so little and the fact they cost something like 2 cents to mint a 1-cent coin. Not sure WHY the cost matters so much, but to trump it does. I mean, it's not like they wear out quickly.

a penny saved is a penny earned

Countries that eliminate their one-cent coins, like Canada and Australia, typically do so because the coin costs more to produce than it is worth and has low purchasing power and utility.

That's the end game here

They can and they did because of the expense

they cost the government more to make than they are worth
and people don't carry them around any more - they just put them in a jar at home

They are doing it because it cost more to make a penny than the penny is worth, Pretty soon the Nickel will fare the same fate.
