They have talked about doing away with pennies for decades. They want a cashless society because they can't trace cash. Tax reasons, illegal activity are a couple of reasons.

A combination of inflation meaning they are worth so little and the fact they cost something like 2 cents to mint a 1-cent coin. Not sure WHY the cost matters so much, but to trump it does. I mean, it's not like they wear out quickly.

Countries that eliminate their one-cent coins, like Canada and Australia, typically do so because the coin costs more to produce than it is worth and has low purchasing power and utility.
