4:35am why would I need sleep?

My anxiety is maxed out. I can't shut my eyes because of this horrible creeping sense of dread. Apparently, holding your breath for as long as you possibly can, short of passing out, activates your parasympathetic nervous system and helps you fall asleep. I tried. I just felt like I couldn't breath. I tried. Cough. Other things. It didn't work. I hate feeling this way. I miss my husband. I just want to snuggle against him, listen to his heart beating and smell his smell. Talking about him is the only thing that calms me down. The next best thing to being with him I suppose. I feel like the biggest mental case ever tonight. Another cup of tea. There's valerian root in it. It tastes like death but maybe it will help. At least I'm staying hydrated.

Sorry you are having a difficult time right now. I hope the valerian root helped

I can relate and hear the anxiety in your voice. My doctor put me on Zoloft but have found meditation, self care and finding a spiritual path have helped me the most. As for sleep, I just slept when I could but never felt rested. Talking helps, especially reliving the good times.

@SageWanderer I took Sertraline several years back and it gave me very disturbing dreams so I had to stop. I would rather stick to natural remedies now.

Try Melatonin.
PatientlyWaiting25 · 46-50, F
@InstructHer I it's only available on prescription here
InstructHer · 61-69, M
@PatientlyWaiting25 I get it directly from the US 😉. Perfectly legal to possess but as you say only prescribed here.

My thoughts too. I had to overcome a major anxiety problem which occurred 35 years into a life and death career. Couldn’t velieve how it affected me. But I’d seen several colleagues go the sane way trying to keep it all going in that environment post 56.
I can only give my own remedies.
Acute. - box breathing. , this ( talking therapy) Realise others have been there and fully recovered Rub one side of your neck only one at the angle of the jaw to maximise your parasympathetic system.
Longer tern. Exercise exercise exercise. Depleted adrenaline and cortisol and releases more dopamine and endogenous opiates than anything else. Build up to really quite high orange zone heart rates. Depletes anxiety and trains parasympathetic.

In my case I was back taking full strain far earlier than medicated colleagues and have never faltered since.

That was acute stress.
You are also sounding profoundly bereaved.
Talking helps but time helps most of all.

Psychologists suggests it takes about a month for every year you were married before you start to return to the new normal.
PatientlyWaiting25 · 46-50, F
@Gelly that would be 18 months. I'm doing better than I was though

@PatientlyWaiting25 it’s not betrayal to let nature heal us. It’s her job.
I would hate for someone to mourn me long long term.
I would far rather know my other had moved on at the pace nature dictated
PatientlyWaiting25 · 46-50, F
@Gelly I just miss him. I don't think it's likely I will ever love anyone that much again but you're right, he wouldn't want me this sad or scared for the future and life does have to move on even if I don't want it to.

I have a different way of gett
ing to sleep....but it's legal here:)
Nevertooold · 56-60, M
@PatientlyWaiting25 Lol....My doc told me that smoking weed is better for you than drinking alcohol and definitely better than smoking cigarettes....It should be legal everywhere!!!!
PatientlyWaiting25 · 46-50, F
@Nevertooold I was told it makes you paranoid if you do too much and I did know a guy who had seven latches and chains on his front door because he was convinced that someone was going to break in. We thought he was like that because of the weed.
Nevertooold · 56-60, M
@PatientlyWaiting25 It really calms me down and clears my mind...I'm not paranoid at all....but that isn't the first time I've heard that...
