I know it’s super edgy but…

I really relax by watching gore. Even my therapist has said it’s a mental problem.
I think I’m just really desensitized to it because I remember my dad putting on gore movies and videos for me as young as 3. It was the norm for me to watch horror and gore movies with him as bonding.
I honestly thought it was normal and wasn’t a problem at all until I began asking people around me if it also relaxes them or if they began watching it that young ad well.
I don’t think it’s a problem right? I mean I come home from work, lie down in bed to go to sleep and I’m either watching shock videos or some documentaries about really gruesome murders.

It's not weird, I'm the same way.

There was a study done a while back about it- the theory is that some people relax while watching scary/gory movies or true crime because it's a way to provide a safe space to process and release emotions related to trauma. In this sense, it can be a way to cope with and make sense of their own experiences.

@DearAmbellina2113 I watch true crime to fall asleep most nights haha

Why would that be a problem? It's an advantage. If you ended up in a situation where someone after a horrible accident needed help, as a desensitized person, you might be much more apt to actually help them.

@CrazyMusicLover maybe, but not necessarily! It’s different seeing shit on a screen, opposed to being in front of someone who is horribly injured or dying

I’m speaking for myself though, you may be right in some people’s cases.

@WaryWitchWandering Yes, that's true. It might be different. I don't respond well to seeing that stuff even on screen, so I wouldn't know.

I know several people who gets calm by it as well. I think part of it is to understand why people do cruel actions instead of label it as evil. It's calming to get perspective.

I think it's fine as long as you don't constantly think about causing harm to others, and worse, act on such impulses.

It makes you feel safer. In my opinion women relax on true crimes and gore shows because it makes them realize they are far away from the evil scenario being narrated. It heightens the feeling of safety/coziness in that couch/bed.
Humans are strange😁

I think your brain just understands its fake so it doesn't bother you
And it relaxes you because you're used to it and it's familiar to you
Horror movies don't bother me
