Why do you think people become vegan?

Seems like there's a lot of cynicism regarding this lifestyle, but maybe that's just because sardonicism is a popular pastime on the internet. Rather than focus on those antagonizers, I'm curious to hear what you honestly believe motivates people to become vegan
I'm vegan, and for me it's simple; I'm a crybaby. All I have to do is picture animals being butchered or mistreated and I want nothing to do with the food.

Compassion doesn't always necessitate tears
Tell that to my tear ducts.

@Pogonophile: I know, but I was speaking more in general than about you specifically

my uncle is vegan. its about respect for animals. he doesnt want to eat their meat or support an industry where they are slaughtered. would you eat human meat if society did that? its about having feelings and a conscience for something.

Well said. I feel like that's a point of view that consistently gets undermined
Not wanting to support the cruel treatment of animals is likely the top reason. I assume these are also often the same people who eat a vegan diet because it has a significantly smaller negative impact on the earth.
And then there's health reasons. Animal products tend to be highly processed. Plus some people just don't digest them well and it has a negative impact on their overall health. There are also people who just think a plant-based diet is all around healthier for various other reasons.

So, guilt/wanting to live more ethically, and improved health are probably what motivates people to adopt a vegan lifestyle thd most.

You covered a lot of bases there, but I think you hit upon most of the main justifications. It certainly speaks a lot about mine
i understand vegetarianism, but not veganism. it seems extreme and a way to feel ethically superior.

There are some militant vegans who harass others who used to be long-term vegans and decide to start eating meat. There was a married couple who had a vegan restaurant and had a big following. When they started eating meat again they got death threats. I don't understand that type of thinking....wouldn't hurt a carnivorous animal but threatening humans with death for doing so.

Their mammies never knew how to cook meat properly..

maybe they don't like how animals have to die for people to eat meat. maybe they just don't like the taste of meat. my step sister is a part of that second group.

I think because they care for animals is the main reason...but knowing a doctor who is a vegan I wonder how he can justify using mice for medical research if he doesn't believe in eating meat, milk or eggs because of his reasons.

@cherokeepatti: That's a possibility, although it would seem like a waste of effort to add unnecessary products in it. I guess I'll just have to proceed with caution
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@HalfCactus: waste of effort? Most processed foods are loaded with crap, sometimes just to dye it or MSG to make people think it's better tasting than what it really is...it won't be any different with artificial meat.
SW-User
@cherokeepatti: The appeal of those foods is that they're tasty and cheap. There are different markets for different people. Lab grown meat will initially be fairly expensive because they lack the economies of scale. Their niche is that they are created without cruelty or death. Adding extra ingredients to it would be unnecessary towards that end. Maybe down the line, it might become diluted to appeal to the tasty and cheap crowd, but it wouldn't be feasible initially

Most vegans I've met just don't like the idea of eating dead animals. Which is fine. They shouldn't have to if they don't want to.

Ethical, health, and environmental reasons.

That summarizes the views of most vegans, I would say

At what?
The way the animals are treated or how they're killed or that something they see as similar to themselves is a meal. Maybe the taste and texture. The things they talk about when they try to get people to stop makes me think it's all pretty much about disgust.
SW-User
@JustAnotherGhost: You do make a valid point. Disgust is usually what motivates people to speak out about something
My mother became a vegetarian to lower her blood pressure and lose weight (it worked). If she didn't still live with my father, she'd probably be vegan. But he likes chicken and fish, so occasionally they have that, too. Most people I know who are vegan have health reasons.
