Why do you think people become vegan?

Seems like there's a lot of cynicism regarding this lifestyle, but maybe that's just because sardonicism is a popular pastime on the internet. Rather than focus on those antagonizers, I'm curious to hear what you honestly believe motivates people to become vegan

i understand vegetarianism, but not veganism. it seems extreme and a way to feel ethically superior.

There are some militant vegans who harass others who used to be long-term vegans and decide to start eating meat. There was a married couple who had a vegan restaurant and had a big following. When they started eating meat again they got death threats. I don't understand that type of thinking....wouldn't hurt a carnivorous animal but threatening humans with death for doing so.
