Why do you think people become vegan?

Seems like there's a lot of cynicism regarding this lifestyle, but maybe that's just because sardonicism is a popular pastime on the internet. Rather than focus on those antagonizers, I'm curious to hear what you honestly believe motivates people to become vegan

my uncle is vegan. its about respect for animals. he doesnt want to eat their meat or support an industry where they are slaughtered. would you eat human meat if society did that? its about having feelings and a conscience for something.
