Why do you think people become vegan?

Seems like there's a lot of cynicism regarding this lifestyle, but maybe that's just because sardonicism is a popular pastime on the internet. Rather than focus on those antagonizers, I'm curious to hear what you honestly believe motivates people to become vegan

I think because they care for animals is the main reason...but knowing a doctor who is a vegan I wonder how he can justify using mice for medical research if he doesn't believe in eating meat, milk or eggs because of his reasons.

There is usually a significant difference in the treatment of lab mice and the treatment of animals used for food. Factory farming accounts for >99.9% of our animal-based food products, and the conditions in those farms are nightmarish. I can't speak for all lab mice, but I'd imagine a much less stressful life

@HalfCactus: So would a vegan eat dairy, eggs or meat if the animals were humanely raised?

@cherokeepatti: Possibly. It depends on the person. Some are more flexible than others. I'm not really sure if I would or not. There would still be the issue of ending an animal's life prematurely or the environmental impact of raising them.

Although when lab-grown meat becomes more available, I think I would hop on that bandwagon. People might be put off by that, but I find it far more humane and practical to do things that way

@HalfCactus: You know when they lab grow it they will probably doctor it up with even more chemicals than is in meats and dairy already.

@cherokeepatti: That's a possibility, although it would seem like a waste of effort to add unnecessary products in it. I guess I'll just have to proceed with caution

@HalfCactus: waste of effort? Most processed foods are loaded with crap, sometimes just to dye it or MSG to make people think it's better tasting than what it really is...it won't be any different with artificial meat.

@cherokeepatti: The appeal of those foods is that they're tasty and cheap. There are different markets for different people. Lab grown meat will initially be fairly expensive because they lack the economies of scale. Their niche is that they are created without cruelty or death. Adding extra ingredients to it would be unnecessary towards that end. Maybe down the line, it might become diluted to appeal to the tasty and cheap crowd, but it wouldn't be feasible initially
