I was brought up nominally as a christian. I later became a devout "born again" christian and began studying the bible properly. It was then that I found I had been deceived, that it was just a collection of myths and superstitions taken from various older belief systems. Now I'm an Atheist too.

@GodSpeed63 It's so hard to explain what being abused by clergy does to a person , You know the feeling you get from your faith ?That feeling of security? That freedom from fear of death? That certainty that there is a heaven and you will go there? I'm assuming you feel all of that .So it makes life much more bearable .I won't ever have that and believe me i'd rater be blissfully ignorant than to have to face the truth . This is what religion did ,not just some pedo priests.

I may not know what you went through with that idiot clergy but I do know what being abused by someone and I feel for you. I can't imagine of what you're going through right now, but I can only relate to you being that I was abused also by my schoolmates. I'll be praying for you.

I do have those feelings at times but I still have my doubts like everyone else. It's really hard to believe that I'm saved, especially when I mess up. The only difference is that God's Holy Spirit within me reminds me that He loves me and will not let me go.

Roman catholic I was told...at 9 I said "this is bullshit" and I was right
Peaches · F
I was raised in the Southern Baptist church. I no longer follow structured religion after studying with different religions, but I am a spiritual person and believe something is in the universe that cares what happens to us. ✨😌🙏🏼
@Peaches Do you care what happens to me🥺
Peaches · F
@canusernamebemyusername I care...until you give me a reason not to.👌🏼😏
@Peaches Fair enough.

Protestant originally, I was even baptized as well. Then I looked into other religions in my teens. Eventually learned that none of them make much sense so stopped believing in all of them. Over the years I learned how evil some of the religions really are, so now I am very thankful not to be a part of any of them.

I never went to church as a child.
dumpstermeow · 41-45, F
My dad goes to catholic church, but if you ask him, he's not religious, he just gets a sense of peace from it. My mom is anti-organized religion. We went to church with my dad until sometime in elementary school, but we never were forced or taught anything in particular. I've never thought too much about it really, it's just a thing some people are into and others aren't.
4meAndyou · F
I was raised Catholic, I attended the Unitarian church for a while, my son was baptized in the Congregational church, and I tried to go back to the Catholic church and didn't remain because of a very mean priest in Lansing, Michigan. I switched to another religion, had a few very bad experiences and now I don't attend church.

My mother was Lutheran, my father a Catholic. Neither raised me in either religion. I am an atheist.

I am, but i’ve been exposed to more than one religion while growing up. Not because of a mixed religious household but because of the school I went to.

Difficult to explain.

@Krishh How are you planning to handle the resultant cognitive dissonance?
Basswizardofmiddleearth · 31-35, M
Atheist here, although I had a brief period when I was in primary school and every morning assembly, the whole school had to sing Christian songs about how the ‘mighty’ god made the world in seven days and all that rubbish! Then I got into science, technology and heavy metal and now I’m happy with what I have done so far.

I was raised in a Roman Catholic household, in which my parents stopped going when I was 10. I was agnostic for many years. In college I went on a spiritual search, and studied world religions. I was a quasi universalist. Then when I was 21, I became a follower of Jesus. I'm now part of a Protestant church.

hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
Agnostic. Went to church at Christmas. Was completely shocked when I became a Christian by being born again to learn that Jesus was God. Up until then I thought the UN secretary general was the most important person.

Catholicism. Although I have my own unique religious beliefs now, I still have a lot of respect for it, as it is my mom's religion and she and I are very close.
