They do it because they think it makes you seem shallow and them seem enlightened about what really matters
bijouxbroussard · F
@AlienTheExtraterrestrial Yes, that sounds about right. 😅

I agree with you.
Mind you......on here you get slated for beathing by some!
Of course, some actors, singers etc give us much pleasure and are very much a part of our lifes. Of course we'd grieve of their passing.

That same thing happened to me here at this group a year or two ago when I made a comment about how sad I had felt due to a celebrity’s passing, whose name I don’t remember at the moment. I don’t understand it.
Piper · 61-69, F
I couldn't agree more. Some of these same people will accuse others of unreasonably "hating" people they don't know personally, too, when they consistently submit hateful posts and comments about people they surely do not know personally.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
Some people are just huge parts of our lives--Brian Wilson is an example--and their impact is huge. Never met him but spoke on the phone a few times. It's not like losing a close friend or blood relative but it's very similar.
bijouxbroussard · F
@uncalled4 I knew you’d understand.

I got introduced to celebrity passion when Elvis died. I was at the hairdresser’s, halfway through a haircut.
I am SO old, we actually heard it on the radio.
The beautician, whom I had known for years, completely dissolved.
I held her while she sobbed heartbrokenly.
Just because I didn’t get it didn’t mean it was not real.
I had to leave with half a haircut.

@Mamapolo2016 I’m caught between sympathy and a giggle at the haircut.
At work in 2009, when we heard the news that Michael Jackson had died, one of my colleagues was sobbing in the bathroom.
"Why am I crying ?" she asked.
"I loved his music, but it’s not like I knew him."
"How old were you when you first knew about him ?" I asked.
"I was ten years old and the Jackson 5 was my first pop concert."
She replied, "Yes, about that age."
I hugged her. "That was a big chunk of our lives. And Michael Jackson was a part of it."

I agree. There are some who will call us weird for the passing of someone we didn't know. But maybe they haven't experienced it yet to know what we have gone through.

@Punxi That’s it, exactly. You just never know.
Has your father recovered ?

@Punxi Very good.

Well said. We may not know "celebrities" personally, but they can still touch our lives and their passing can definitely have an emotional effect on us.
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
It is surprising to me at times when I find my self painfully sad at the loss of someone famous. Shelly Duvall’s death was one of those that moved me unexpectedly.
bijouxbroussard · F
@Harmonium1923 Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s death hit me hard. His character Theo on the Cosby show reminded me of my brother and I always felt liked I watched him grow up.

Have had negative responses to my own memorial posts. I usually just delete the comments. Yet I now say that I might do so on the bottom of the post.
Northwest · M
Generally speaking, yes, but I can't help but smile at the thought that Rush Limbaugh is on his 5th year of sobriety.
bijouxbroussard · F
@Northwest I can’t help but think the world improved just a bit when he left it. Harsh, perhaps—but true.

It can happen, as some people have no empathy
Just ignore them

@Strictmichael75 The funny thing is, I’ve seen it come from people who are nice, otherwise…it’s like a blind spot they have. 🥺
