We were not asked to celebrate diversity. We were told to celebrate diversity, except for diversity of thought. That’s not allowed.
@AthrillatheHunt your specific meanings here seem cloaked, please elaborate .. what are you specifically disliking, and what aspects of you are you hinting are being victimized?
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@ThirstenHowl like most I dislike being told to do something (or else ) as opposed to being asked . We are all victims of something.
@AthrillatheHunt like being told not to murder people, rather than being asked not to murder people?

I experienced a lot of intolerance and bigotry in my childhood and the early part of my career. There is more awareness in society of the benefits of diversity and the costs of prejudice and social injustice. Unfortunately there is a very loud man in charge of the USA right now who finds it politically expedient to exploit racism, sexism, religious hatred and xenophobia which were lying just below the surface. It is hopefully just a passing phase, but one we could all do without.

@NativePortlander1970 "Some of my best friends are black . . "
@SunshineGirl Trump gave Jesse Jackson campain offices at no cost when Jackson ran for president in the 80's, Trump was on Oprah numerous times during the 80's and 90's, Trump often mingled with boxing promoter Don King during prize fights. Try again, foreigner

@NativePortlander1970 He also used to support a more socially progressive political party in those days . .

"despite we're fighting for the rights of all and of all differences"

The states have put trans people in the same category as pedos. And gay people are practiically in the same category aswell, just not officially.

How is that fighting for the rights of all?

I'm Norwegian, born, raised, and living in Norway, and anyone within the LGBTQ+ community is scared now because the states has contaminated the Norwegian people with their hate.

We even have flat earthers, anti vaxxers, and religious prosecution of non-religious people because of murica.

Again: How are people fighting for the rights of all differences?

@TheRealBarbossa I see, thank you.
I will look into it again tomorrow because I am tired and as this subject interests me I want to come with a clear head.
@TheRealBarbossa I don’t understand; how would the United States have the power to affect attitudes in Norway, an older and more socially progressive country ? Unless (like here) those attitudes already exist under the surface. 🙁

firstly, I don't know the context of this question, and nowadays it seems more than ever the actual background context of any question is crucial to know, because while we used to all know what various words meant, in recent years rightwingers have started trying to change the meanings of words to implicitly become their opposite meaning (e.g., Trump trying to co-opt a phrase like "fake news" to mean the opposite of what it meant before he did so)

rightwingers for example used to have the market cornered on intolerance, but now they want to make it seem as though anyone not going along with their intolerance are now the actual intolerant ones, and that shunning their intolerance is also shunning "diversity of thought"

so basically at this point, if you don't already know someone and know what they actually think about all of these things, or what they actually mean by any of these words, it's impossible to answer their questions regarding such things, because the added context of what's actually behind their questions is missing

it's like you could've just as easily had a situation in a 1942 concentration camp in Poland where the SS officers were claiming the Jews about to be gassed were intolerant of Nazism, and that being so was precluding diversity, that Nazis were being cancelled, the Jews were being entitled by not wanting to have anything to do with Nazis, and so forth

words are not tethered to meaning any more, what they mean depends entirely on who is using them and in what context they are using them, which can make discussing anything impossible sometimes when you just stumble upon a topic that is presented somewhat vaguely (without context)
I think when people have been mistreated long enough, it takes an even longer time to not see it everywhere. And we hadn’t even gotten to equality yet.

You can’t just STOP racism and expect it to be just fine. There will be and should be blow back. There are prices to pay.

It’s not diversity that’s the problem as much as it is disagreement on how to handle it. There’s nothing with being diverse and everything wrong with how it’s treated and people can’t make opinions meet on what should be done with it.
YoMomma ·
I don't mind diversity but people don’t have a right to exploit others and commit crimes because of race. That’s just wrong and evil but they use it as a cover for their crimes.. pulling the race card
People have always been intolerant here. There has been legal systemic racism in the United States since its inception.

The mid to late 20th century had been mostly devoted to trying to right those wrongs, but slowly, and 50 years was hardly enough time to address close to 300 years of grievances.

But those who were used to privilege began to see attempts to establish equity as their oppression and longed for a return to days with a caste system.

The election of a black president, who was well-liked by both many here and many of our allies also brought those people out of the shadows with the Tea Party (precursor to MAGA and Donald Trump).

Trump used that simmering racism to gain power and made people comfortable expressing those attitudes openly again.

Exactly what Scroff said but to add to it.

The 90's and esrly 2000s hit a peak so far ln exceptance. Uts way worse now than it was in that breif period. Around that same time though several broadcast companies started blasting the screens and airwaves with jusy foul pot stirring for the religious and conservative right to latch onto. Especially AM radio but also cable, the two main lifelines of rural America where other news outlets and more importantly newspapers were severly lacking. These "pundits" riled them up into conspiracies that the aky was falling and the cities were burning and coming for wverything they had. Now we're at the crest of their paranoia and all tjeir kids who grew up listening to that garbage and hesring their heratric parents blame the world for their shitty lives are in the voting booths.

I think the pendulum is swinging in that direction again.. And ignorance is the root cause...
Thrust · 56-60, M
Diversity is hardly an intrinsic good. People everywhere feel more comfortable with people like themselves
Convivial · 26-30, F
@Thrust yes... All thinking the same...
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
Ignorance is dangerous.
In itself, it's not evil, but wilful ignorance is the Road to Folly.
We are not intolerant to diversity itself, we are intolerant of unqualified people getting positions of power and responsibility over those who have worked hard and studied for those positions. Case in point, the recent Los Angeles fires that nearly got out of control because the fire chief was a DEI hire, she clusterfucked everything to where the hydrants had no water.
