People Who Work Shitty Jobs Deserve As Much Respect As Any Other Sentient Being

Regardless of whether the consumer or the employer thinks the job is important or not. A lot of the stress people in the service have to deal with is not the workload itself but the stuck up pigs that they have to take abuse from several times every shift. As much as they can blame it on the employees and excuse the disrespect with "Get a better job." They'd be the angry red faced sweaty pigs should those employees move onto greener pastures and not be stood at checkout having the self entitled c***s shit down their throats because your shake costs 25 cents more.

If you treat people with dignity, they are more content. ☺️

Even people who work no jobs deserve respect.

This is why I switched to work where I’m not directly interacting with customers. I found a handful of apps that allow me to pick up shifts for positions in merchandising, dishwashing, manufacturing, warehouse work, etc.

I work a few days at circle k’s through an app called Shiftsmart. It’s nice being able to pick which locations I wanna work at. You find out which places attract less douchebags and also which places have cool coworkers.

I’m just glad technology is changing the workforce. I’m able to cash out my earnings within 24 hours of finishing my shifts. The traditional 2 week wait is ridiculous in my opinion.

But yeah, I’ve came to the conclusion that regardless of where I work, I’m gonna have to deal with a douchebag, either in the form of a customer, a coworker or a supervisor. It’s rare to find a workplace where everyone is cool but it’s not impossible.

@HermannFegelein That sounds pretty good, I have to say I have had a few shitty jobs but the option to drift from one place to another would have made life a lot easier. You know that feeling of being trapped and not being sure if you'd be able to find somewhere else? That sucks.

I've worked retail for years. I no longer put up with BS from anyone, customers or bosses. And customers or coworkers that have treated me poorly in the past I actively avoid and ignore. I also push boundaries on stupid rules, yah I know I'm risking my job but employee morale is important. I do my job well, so they usually leave me on my own. The pleasant customers and coworkers however I will go above and beyond to assist them. Help them with their projects, save money, etcetera

@JestAJester What are some of the stupid rules you push against; and how do you do that?
JestAJester · 31-35, M
@Really cant take breaks in your car. No smoking breaks. Have to use a lowes approve safety box cutter that doesnt cut shit. Suppose to help customers even if theyre rude and belligerent. They want us to cover multiple departments by ourselves or learn how-to do everything in the store without compensation. Theres lots. I simply dont do it, sure i get in trouble from time to time but they cant afford to fire anyone for silly things like that

@JestAJester I get it. Some of the stupid rules are probably attempts at pre-emptive defence against the stupid, rampant lawsuit culture we live in.
I agree.. I respect the janitors just as much as the ceo.

@Venturist I don't value people on there job positions, I value a person on who they are as an individual.

If everyone had to work a period of community service in the service sector they would learn what conditions are really like for many hardworking people and perhaps gain a modicum of empathy when they returned to their normal jobs.
Convivial · 26-30, F
Well said... I've only recently moved into retail for the first time and while some customers are real gems, others need a severe head butting lol
wonkywinky · 51-55, M
I cannot stand those arrogant people that assume because someone might work in a "menial job" in a shop etc,they are there for the sole purpose of running around for them as long as they demand.
I once saw in a shoe shop a customer shout at the girl"What do you mean they are out of stock?You havent even looked properly!"..Then she called over the manager and demanded the girl be reprimanded...The manager went to look and indeed the shoes were out of stock.
The woman just walked out in a huff and never apologised.

@wonkywinky Despicable.
Absolutely- guess what- store policy is not an employee's fault!
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Truth and if there were no people who would work those jobs others would learn this quickly
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
There are very few jobs more important than that of the person who picks up your garbage.
Alyosha · 31-35, M
I like how people drone on about the "dignity of work" (as though the expenditure of energy and the taking of orders confers dignity) but then this is the reality. What they really mean is they worship people with money.
Alyosha · 31-35, M
@Convivial It's fun how if you just rephrase things to avoid the point, you can keep believing whatever bullshit!
Convivial · 26-30, F
@Alyosha whatever..
You don't take pride in doing your job well, that's ok...

@Desertteddesert Nobody truly "makes it on their own" . . this is a myth propagated by a few selfish individuals to make themselves feel better. We are social, interdependent creatures and everyone is entitled to be treated decently.
