Why do I keep hearing people describe others as "Jews" especially in a dismissive tone?

What exactly does it mean to be a "Jew"? Isn't that a bit like calling someone an African or a European?

And is everyone from Israel really a "Jew" or are they Israeli?

I'm open to input here but I get a sneaking suspicion that calling people "Jews" is a bit too convenient for everyone besides "Jews".

The term which I think is only ever used perjoratively is "Zionist".

@ArtieKat I've been accused of that, humorously enough. Apparently, if you're not in favor of the destruction of Israel, that's what they call you.

@ArtieKat Zionism has come to be used that way. In its origins it simply called for the development of the historical homeland of the Jews, them in Israel.

@ArtieKat "Zionist" comes from a movement among Jews prior to the re-establisment of Israel as a nation in which the ideal was for Jews around the world to return to the Middle East and re-create the Israeli nation. It was generally associated with a strictly Jewish nation based on the religion.
@ArtieKat You're talking to someone who hears someone use "Jew" in a condescending and accusatory manner on a weekly basis.

@LordShadowfire Yes. Those are usually the bigots who conveniently forget that if it wasn't for Judaism there would not have been Christianity - followed several centuries later by Islam. Mohammed and his followers were not peaceful indigenous residents of the area between "the river and the sea". They were bloodthirsty conquerors who had no historical claim to the land.

@SinlessOnslaught I mean, honestly, any word can be used as a slur...

You hetero, you. 😆

@LordShadowfire Absolutely. It's the tone of the delivery.

@ArtieKat more humans died because of religion than any natural causes.
