In fairness, AI experts are legitimately worried about general AI. Not because it might betray us, but because
a) we might not know how to direct its behavior properly (our brains work on a rewards system, but replicating that in a machine could raise a variety of concerns)
b) someone might deliberately use an AI malignantly, such as a terrorist or rogue state.

Didn't one of the auto-driving cars get programmed to sacrifice pedestrians to save the driver/car? Anyway, mostly I'm worried because I'm 99% sure my printer is self-aware, and knows when I need to print something.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Magnolia21 Mine definitely is, and it hates its job.
NoahB · 31-35, M
@Magnolia21 lmao yeah i think printers are def self aware

I don't believe for a second computers now, or in the foreseeable future will be able to "think on their own". Their operation will always be bounded by human thought, since their operation is driven by algorithms designed and implemented by human thought processes. If they do bad things it will because someone coded an algorithm that executed when conditions were true, and in so doing, did bad things. Fun to think about, though, and makes for good sci-fi.
ImperialAerosolKidFromEP · 51-55, M
@rfatoday I don't think for a second it will happen with silicon computers. Quantum computers could be major disruptors.
rfatoday · 61-69, M
@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP Interesting thought.
EatTheRichUSA · 22-25, M
Agreed, why would a robot care about the biggest threat to the world?(humans) They don't have a sense of right or wrong..
EatTheRichUSA · 22-25, M
@Whodunnit then delete it lol
Whodunnit · M
@EatTheRichUSA In a contained system that a perfectly viable solution. If however it managed to get out into the outside world via some form of communication system it would be like trying to kill a swarm of wasps with a chopstick.
EatTheRichUSA · 22-25, M
@Whodunnit Then be talented

Ever seen terminator , the matrix, I Robot.
Sophia the robot. They also have had to shut down a couple AI already because of it.
I’ll be ready when it happens or at least my children will.

@NoahB working on getting a large grant for my organization so we can work on technology that will protect the human from all the low vibration interactions… in a nutshell.
We’ll create our own AI, our own robots.
It may sound crazy but I’ve been working on this for a couple years cuz I had a dream when I was a kid.

@Heavenlywarrior low vibration interactions? not familiar with the term. what is it?
Heavenlywarrior · 36-40, M
@NoahB all things have a vibration and frequency…
If we can monitor and control vibrations we are able to manipulate matter.
High Vibrations- good feelings, good things happen
Low vibrations- bad feelings, bad things happen.

So you have no idea what narcissism is. Care to try again. Maybe use the word hubris. It is not the same as narcissism but most people don't know that.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
[@NoahB
hubris: noun hu·bris ˈhyü-brəs
: exaggerated pride or self-confidence.
Narcissism: selfishness
excessive interest in oneself

@hippyjoe1955 ooh! Okay you bring up a good point here.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@NoahB Not trying to hijack your thread. Just trying to use the correct language. Most people think that hubris and narcissism are the same thing and they are not. Won't end the world or serve tea in China but there is a very big difference.
Northwest · M
Good that thought. At one point, distributed AI cannot be simply unplugged, and “computers” will not look like computers. Long story…
gol979 · 41-45, M
But in the hands of the parasite class, AI has already been weaponised against people
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
I don't think that's a narcissistic concern. It's really a very serious one. The narcissism comes in, i believe, in how soon people think it could happen.
Wiseacre · F
No narcissism there...we should all be worried!
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
As if we could create consciousness. The Chinese room experiment disproves the whole computers becoming conscious thing. It's just a poor emulation. And even if a compiter does gain consciousness and intends evil then freaking unplug it.
These people act like your tv is gonna sprout arms and legs and start kicking your aas.

How is it narcissistic to express conern
PoeticPlay · 51-55, M
Just tell it to divide by zero. 🤯
the artificial environment around you is not aggressive. simply, it makes you a part of it. but it can also kill you. it just doesn't care.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
I mean, if the computer is truly intelligent, it recognizes that human behavior is harmful to the planet, and will take the necessary logical steps to help the planet. Just saying.
NoahB · 31-35, M
@LordShadowfire simply unplug it
MethDozer · M
You're assuming the only possible threat is intentional and malicious.
