Capitalism causes that. That somehow, there's this pie that needs to be divided up and you might not get a slice if someone else gets a bigger one. That's not how things work, but that is how consumerism works.
Personally, I like equity better than equality. With equity, everyone gets exactly what they need based on their conditions. No one is better than anyone else because we all have a different center line and they are provided to meet that personal line.
I think that is fairer than equality.

@FoxyQueen Equity needs to work alongside a general idea of equality. That everyone is entitled to a reasonable share of the pie based on the fact of our common humanity, not simply their ability to produce and consume.
The first one is especially disheartening. People often view equality as a zero-sum game. If someone with less gets something, then that's being taken away from me. Like when people refer to LGBT rights as "special rights", when really we're just asking to have access to the same things straight people do (marriage, adoption, etc.)
@SunshineGirl And actual inequality. Some folks complain that they should be able to celebrate "pride" without realizing that they have always celebrated it—by excluding others and forcing them to hide or feel ashamed. 🥺
