Is human life really so cheap that ownership of guns outweighs it?

Another mass killing of innocent children in America. With the right to own/bear arms, why are there so many people who happily take their weapons to gun down children? Why are there not rules about carrying weapons in public?

In Switzerland, there are rifles in every home, since all Swiss are members of the national militia. But you never hear of mass killings. Same in Austria. In the United States, there must be some widespread psychological problem that young people think they can fulfil some delusion by killing innocent children.

We now exist in a society for when a tragic shooting takes place, there apparently is no time used to grieve. No time for people to show reverence for the dead and no time to just show respect for all the victims. We are all encouraged to have an initial act of outrage, without ever taking the time in letting the facts and evidence unfold.

It has becomes a race by both sides of the political spectrum in order to place the blame on the other side for the tragedy. The media wants us to believe that the shooter always had to be motivated by a particular ideology, in order to commit such a heinous act.

How low have both sides become? Why is there always this insistence by the media to use tragedies for one side's political gain?

We need to all take a collective breath and stop feeding into these partisans on both sides, who use tragedies to instill hatred of our political opponents.

Time for all of us as decent human beings to learn how to act with class when a tragedy occurs. Wait for the gathering of evidence, and then come to a conclusion on why and how this particular incident took place, based upon the facts, along with an extensive investigation.

Most of the time these tragedies boil down to a mentally disturbed person, just reaching his/her tipping point and snapping. People within families need to pay close attention to loved ones struggling. With the proper attention, help and genuine care, most of this stuff could become avoidable.

Let's all respect the dead, especially when tragedies take place and put an end to scoring points politically.

Let's all make an attempt to resemble decent and caring human beings, and not pawns of particular ideologies/media outlets, which love to take advantage of our emotions, when we initially react to these types of tragic scenarios.

The Nation Rifle Association and their Republicans in Congress have enabled mass shootings to happen, Democrats have passed common sense background check in the house of representatives but the Republicans in the Senate have stalled and filibustered the bill.
th3r0n · 41-45, M
@SW-User no, idiots like you are creating the reason for mass shootings

Do you know the reason? I do

The reason they're happening is they're being set up so people like you will rally for gun control and they can take away citizen's rights and claim the citizens wanted it...freakin' pathetic and they're winning because of stupidity

Of course not.
The loss of liberty is another question though.
why are there so many people who happily take their weapons to gun down children?
Barabara - it's not like people are waiting in line to shoot children. You're not that stupid, are you? Just being overly dramatic - right?
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
@Budwick You have to be aware that the reaction of those in power to increase gun violence could in fact have a negative impact on your liberty

You need to move with the times.

Also fyi

In England, Catholic rulers prohibited their Protestant subjects from owning firearms, and the English Bill of Rights corrected that injustice in 1689.

@Budwick you are truly a sick man!! I hope people eventually see you for who you are on here. You have your base but the rest think you’re an ass. If someone even comes close to exposing you, BLOCK!!

@MrAverage1965
the reaction of those in power to increase gun violence
Even with all of sleepy Joe's fuck ups, there's been no violent push back.
So, what fantasies are you making up in that Marxist brain of yours?
th3r0n · 41-45, M
Which life? Because criminals and people with ill intent will get guns one way or another, they won't be vaporized and disappear

That means that the gun laws you're in favor of will mean more rapes, more murders, more theft, robbery, home invasions

Because criminals will still have guns, law abiding citizens won't

It's a power balance

You're thinking "get rid of guns" which will not happen

Even if you're starkly against guns, you can't be for these gun laws and not be ignorant, it just doesn't work

The lives you're speaking of, far many more would be lost due to people being easy prey without defenses and the criminals knowing that people don't have them
Anon066 · 31-35, M
@th3r0n defensive uses of guns far outweigh gun violence every year.
th3r0n · 41-45, M
@Anon066 I believe that, and if everyone had them then the "gun violence" would almost entirely halt

The people that do such things are cowards, they won't go attack armed prey

The Swiss actually have a higher rate of mass shooting deaths than the US per capita. The US doesn't even make the top 10.

https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/mass-shootings-by-country

Average (Mean) Annual Death Rate per Million People from Mass Public Shootings (U.S., Canada, and Europe, 2009-2015):
Norway — 1.888
Serbia — 0.381
France — 0.347
Macedonia — 0.337
Albania — 0.206
Slovakia — 0.185
Switzerland — 0.142
Finland — 0.132
Belgium — 0.128
Czech Republic — 0.123
United States — 0.089
Austria — 0.068
Netherlands — 0.051
Canada — 0.032
England — 0.027
Germany — 0.023
Russia — 0.012
Italy — 0.009

I don't hear about mass shootings in Switzerland because I don't follow the news from Switzerland but per capita, a Swiss citizen appears 1 and a half times more likely to be killed by a mass shooting event than a US citizen. Norway surprises me, I have been there and while they don't appear to care much for tourists, I wouldn't think they would take the lead worldwide for mass shootings.

@Handfull1

One way to skew the data is to selectively move the decimal point so it rounds to zero.
Handfull1 · 61-69, F
@Heartlander I get that. Was just pointing out things aren’t always accurate. On both sides!
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@Handfull1

:) the only way to have a true zero median would be to have data with negative (below zero) occurrences or no data at all.

The overall argument should be redirected to the "why" do we have so many Americans hell bent on harming or murdering other people, whether one at a time or in mass.

Shooting victims need to be merged with knife victims and those killed with a baseball bat or pushed into the path of a subway. What they all have in common is that there is a someone who wants to kill someone else. Why in the US do we have so many of these people?

@BarboraK Babs The Trump wing of Republican politicians and their supporters don't care about the lives of children, they care about their military type guns the AR15 & AK47 before the lives of innocent civilians
SW-User
@SW-User I didn't give you a down vote, but you sure deserve it!
SW-User
The Trump wing Republican politicians tout their rating from NRA, show off machine guns in their political campaign ads, they also don't support common sense background checks, nor red flag laws, instead they support no restrictions to own all types of guns including the machine guns that enabled the mass shooting at Uvalde elementary school that got 19 Children and 2 Teachers murdered.
SW-User
@daydeeo Why are you defending Republican politicians who don't care about your life, the Democrats are the one that are trying to pass gun safety laws to protect children and every citizen, the Republicans in the Senate are filibustering the gun safety bill.
SW-User
@daydeeo You should stop supporting Republicans, your party affiliation is a choice, not the way you were born, people can switch the way they vote, only the Democrats care about public safety.

You are correct. And that is why gun control is not the answer.
Although I must disagree with your characterization that there are "so many people who happily take their weapons to gun down children.”
It is an exceedingly rare occurrence(although not rare enough), and no one who does it is happy.
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
@daydeeo

Sadly not rare enough

There were 34 school shootings in 2021, 24 of which occurred after August 1. A shooting on Nov. 30, in which a student killed four people and injured seven at an Oxford, Mich., high school, was the deadliest school shooting since May 2018. As of the end of 2021, there were 92 school shootings since 2018.

There are many problems in the uk and one of the major problems is the social services but thankgod we dont allow citizens to own guns . I am just praying that as our young people leave college and university things like social services will change . If not I am glad I will hopefully be gone soon as it really upsets me the way things are . However I have lost all hope for the US as their young people seem no better than the adults before them .
Peril · F
It's the USA so its to be expected.

Guns are more important than human life.
Anon066 · 31-35, M
So guns both are and aren't the problem?

This post is very bipolar.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
Good question.

But maybe the question should be focused on why there are so many murderous Americans Vs Switzerland and Austria?

What do Swiss and Austrian parents do to raise children to become responsible members of society Vs what we do to raise so many irresponsible members of society?
DrSunnyTheSkeptic · 26-30, M
Well the thing is, in Austria I'm pretty sure you'd have to go trough a lot more trouble to obtain a firearm, and I'm talking pistol, getting a semi auto rifle there is definitely way harder than the US. Of course gun ownership doesn't outweigh human lives but at this point I think the US is too far gone to ever make guns illegal.
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
Its the American mentality at fault . The only difference is the American indians used bows and arrows the Americans use guns . However thats the only difference the mentality of the old west hasnt changed they all still think their cowboys living in times of cowboys and gunslingers .
Applepiedom · 56-60, M
People can have access without any real training. And then bleeding heart liberals want the government to fix it. If you use a gun like that, death by firing squad. And the ones who lost do the shooting. Maybe it'll take a while to actually kill them
SW-User
Mentally ill people should not be getting easy access to guns period.
SW-User
@SW-User Now, that makes sense...
When will you people realize that the bad guys have guns regardless to the law/s?
