Is human life really so cheap that ownership of guns outweighs it?

Another mass killing of innocent children in America. With the right to own/bear arms, why are there so many people who happily take their weapons to gun down children? Why are there not rules about carrying weapons in public?

In Switzerland, there are rifles in every home, since all Swiss are members of the national militia. But you never hear of mass killings. Same in Austria. In the United States, there must be some widespread psychological problem that young people think they can fulfil some delusion by killing innocent children.

You are correct. And that is why gun control is not the answer.
Although I must disagree with your characterization that there are "so many people who happily take their weapons to gun down children.”
It is an exceedingly rare occurrence(although not rare enough), and no one who does it is happy.

Sadly not rare enough

There were 34 school shootings in 2021, 24 of which occurred after August 1. A shooting on Nov. 30, in which a student killed four people and injured seven at an Oxford, Mich., high school, was the deadliest school shooting since May 2018. As of the end of 2021, there were 92 school shootings since 2018.
