What Has Been Your Greatest Fail In The Kitchen?

Mine was baking a cake and baking powder and bicarbonate soda was in the same looking pots by the same company an I picked up the soda by mistake and the cake tasted of washing up detergent and I had to start again. 🤣
Failures like over cooking happens sometimes.But there was this time(in 2002) I remember where I escaped a fatal accident in kitchen.I was cooking Biryani in an old cooker holding my 1.5 yrs old son.Maybe around afternoon 12:30 pm.He was crying a lot than usual,pulling my hair and dress.To pacify him I went to the corridor to get him some fresh air.Just 4-5 minutes later,a loud blasting sound from the kitchen was heard.I was startled and when I went to the kitchen to see what happened,the entire kitchen was messy with the Biryani I cooked and almost all the glasses in the windows were shattered all over the place.I found that the old cooker malfunctioned and blast opened.Really I escaped from that accident out of god's grace that day.Since then,I never used a cooker more than a year and take extreme care while I deal with them.Maybe my son was my guardian angel that day.
@cherokeepatti Seems many kitchen accidents are because of pressure cookers.
@cherokeepatti My maternal Grandmother always pulled the pressure valve stem a few times when she was doing her jarred preserves and tomatoes, she had too many friends have blowups.

@WomanThoughts yeah and it scared me. But she was “water-bathing” jars of beans, that was the problem. And thought she could bring the heat up better by putting the lid on (not tightening it down) but it got hot enough to vibrate and self-sealed, a jar of beans broke and clogged the valve. Kind of pissed me off because I bought her a water-bather to water can tomatoes and fruit in but she did this instead. And water-bathing beans is not safe because there isn’t enough acid in them, skirting with botulism doing it that way.
My son was a baby and my wife was out. I decided to make some popcorn in the micro. I must have fat fingered the time, and instead of 5 minutes set it for 50. Was taking care of the kid when I smelled something burning. The popcorn was smouldering, I had completely forgot about it. Oddly enough the micro didn't work very well afterwards (and smelled bad too).

I made a chili and did not pay attention to amount of Cumin I had put into the chili. It was one of those crock pot chilis where starting out I put cumin in it, then again, a few hours later thinking I had forgot too and repeated a couple more times before tasting the chili. Oh God was it awful and I could not salvage it.

The dogs, not wild animals around the farm would eat it where I dumped it out in the field. Yuck.
@WillaKissing My Great Grandfather once made his chili so spicy that not even he could eat it, so he threw it over the fence for the neighbor's chickens. The next very early morning the neighbor lady come banging at his door demanding to know what he fed them, his first thought was "Oh fuck, I killed them." When he asked her why, she said she wanted his recipe, they never laid so many eggs in their life.

@WillaKissing lol, it happens. 😁

Making fried bread and then taking it to the living room to eat it. Started thinking the neighbors were making stir-fry but the skillet of oil was on fire, flames shooting up. Glad I got it put out before it damaged anything. A box of salt to the rescue. Then called maintenance to change the smoke alarm (it was just put in about a month before and was defective)…they were at my apartment within 30 minutes.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@cherokeepatti wow that was lucky then.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Primnproper you bet it was. I don’t fry very often but when I do when I am finished I make sure to pull the skillet off of the burner and then put a lid on it.

So I once thought I could drop a 30lb turkey in a cooking bag while one of my kids was holding it. I now know this was a bad idea.

My reaction was "Damn the need to make stronger cooking bags"😒
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@LilPrincess ouch! I hope no children were hurt in this experiment. 😅
LilPrincess · 41-45, F
@Primnproper No thankfully but going forward we started having pizza for Thanksgiving 😂

@LilPrincess 😂😂

I was learning how to cook and I put wet pork in hot oil. I set the hood in the kitchen on fire and the fire alarm went off.😬 good thing I was quick to put a tea towel to contain and stop it.😄
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@GunFinger that is so easy to forget.
Azlotto · M
I forgot to poke holes in this one.

Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Azlotto oops! Now for the clean up!😁

My mom sent me to the store for cherry peppers for some Malaysian dish she was making; the recipe called for 13 of them.

Having never seen a cherry pepper before in my life, I messed up and bought habaneros instead. 😬

thepreposterouspanda · 36-40, M
@Primnproper Yup! One of those nights we all took a bite and then collectively decided to order a pizza. 😂
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@thepreposterouspanda good call! 👍
twistedrope · 26-30, M
I once put in dish soap instead of oil in the frying pan. The smell almost made me pass out when I noticed it and it took a bit to get out.

Or when I slipped a knife into my hand trying to separate two froozen wedges. Not my proudest scar.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@twistedrope definitely sounds like a disaster..lol
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@eyeno 😂
eyeno · M
@Primnproper thats the last time you'll use me as a test subject.

RenFur · 70-79, M
Never learning to cook. The stove and the oven are never in use. Just the microwave.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@RenFur there you go then!

Primnproper · 56-60, F

Plasticbag · 100+, M
Baked a cake. Cut it and realised there was baking paper still in it. Pretty special 😶
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Plasticbag 😁 oh dear..
Plasticbag · 100+, M
@Primnproper yeah it was rainbow layered so had to bake all the colours separately. Looked beautiful tho 😩
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Plasticbag yes they are hard work..
Failing to follow recipe instructions, it was horrible tasting. I thought my mouth was going to explode
Handfull1 · 61-69, F
Not really in the kitchen but still cooking. Had the entire family over for a cookout and was raining. The grill was just at the edge of the garage and someone accidentally hit the door button. Must have been before safety sensors and it hit the grill. Smashed the grill and all the food went flying. Not one of my best moments!! 🙄🙄
Northwest · M
Too many to count.
Primnproper · 56-60, F

Primnproper · 56-60, F
@HotPizza71 we all make mistakes. I’m just Mary Poppins “Practically” perfect in every way! 🤣🤣
Not completely!
@cherokeepatti I wish I knew, no matter which recipe I followed over the years growing up they never baked right, so by the time I was 21 I gave up and just went with the Jiffy brand boxed brownies after that.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@NativePortlander1970 Betty Crocker brownies are pretty good if you add nuts or chocolate chips and a bit more vanilla.

I learned how to bake brownies when I was 9 years old and was selling them door-to-door in a small town, walking for miles every day. I made some pretty good change that way to have spending money while my father sat in the bar every day and night drinking away.
@cherokeepatti I found the jiffy brand to be more fudgy and chewy, I'm also not a fan of nuts, most of my paternal family are allergic to one degree or another, one cousin just a drop of hours old peanut oil can make him deathly sick, as he found out after kissing his ex wife six hours AFTER she had a pb&j.
