Not sure I fully understand exactly what you’re asking but my anonymity here is really important to me. I don’t have many friends irl anymore - I’m kind of isolated I suppose. But I surely wouldn’t share some things I’ve shared on here with anyone irl.

I kind of started being online in an era where you protected your identity up front and then later shared it with individuals you grew to trust. As for the supposed trade off you mention, I cannot say that being on Facebook with my real identity made me any better friends. Never really met anyone new on Facebook. If anything, the anonymity here spurs more efforts to learn each other because you aren't surrounded by the friends you know in real life.
Most of my best online friends were made from behind gaming screen names anyways.

@Lonar2 There may not be one. The community is designed to operate in a specific way and has largely drawn from people that choose to be here because of that design. I guess the question really becomes: What is the root of the displeasure? How does whether a person's real world friends know that they are here impact how complete of a profile they are putting up for the benefit of strangers is? Is it about how some people abuse the anonymity to act like total asshats?

Anonymity is important to both of us on here because we do run into a few unsavory characters. We do enjoy meeting interesting people from all over and hearing their stories. We don't necessarily want most of them to show up at our door.

Some people see anonymity as freedom
Others see it as avoidance.
Neither is universally right or wrong—it depends on how it’s used.
A catfish for instance more than likely will include all sorts of details to their exotic profile in which to support the fantasy life they wish to portray. 🤔

You might be too picky, judgmental, and elitist. I'm all about full disclosure, but you first need to prove you are worthy.

@Lonar2 Well, the only way you can find that out is by interacting with the person, not their profile which could be (and most likely is) fake. Anyone can create a profile crafted to draw you in. Profiles don't really mean that much especially online. They are less reliable than a CV. What exactly are your intentions?

@Lonar2 That's the ideal purpose of the profile. But dear Lonar2 (if that's your real name), life doesn't often conform to the "ideal purpose." Tbh, it seems like you are searching for a shortcut to getting to know someone and avoiding accountability for your conclusions, decisions, and attitude that comes from putting in the time to learn about someone. You kids today all want everything hand-delivered to you in a nice and neat package so that you don't have to put in the work or risk getting hurt. Real relationships aren't built on the easy way out, I'm afraid. You just may have to learn that on your quest to pursue interactions with people who only have "the perfect profile."

I love my anonymity but also, I am transparent, so if I get "revealed" that should be OK

I'm only anonymous to the public
Friends do get to see me

Having all your personal info on here for the public to see isn't wise. You'll understand this the longer you stay here 🤣
