[sep]

The House Foreign Affairs Committee announced on Friday, January 27 2023 that it will vote
next month on a bill intended to prohibit the use of TikTok, a well-known social media platform in
China, in the United States.

The measure was planned by the panel’s chair Representative Michael McCaul over U.S.
national security concerns, noting that the popular app gives the Chinese government a back
door into American citizens’ phones.

To pass, it would need 60 votes in the Senate and would have to overcome considerable
obstacles in Congress.

The U.S. government's Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) and
Tiktok have been in talks since 2021 with the aim of achieving a national security agreement to
safeguard the data of U.S. Tiktok users.

Last December 2022, a law that forbade federal employees from accessing or downloading
Tiktok on government-owned devices was signed by President Biden. Tiktok use on
state-owned devices is likewise prohibited in more than 25 U.S. states.

Idk man, we've got people dying from gun violence and police brutality everywhere you look but the government wants to cry about tiktok ? Ok
wackidywack · 22-25
@Elessar it's only getting clearer and clearer that the government cares very little of the people that puts them into power

As well as the future people too because the school shootings only ever really slowed due to the pandemic and not even
Elessar · 26-30, M
@wackidywack They care about their donors, or to be precise the more consistent ones (corporations, billionaires). Last but not least, about one every two people reason (and vote) against their very own interests, like they're some temporarily inconvenienced billionaires, so I don't really see many hopes for improvement happening any time soon
TeirdalinFirefall · 31-35, M
Actually we should drop every subject because people are dying due to violence.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
But when Putin, Erdogan, the Taliban and everyone in between do the same, they're anti-democratic and tyrants.
Which they are.
State-owned devices with sensitive information are a whole different world than regular citizens' phones. It's not like people do not already post every detail about their lives on social media. If China wants information, it's all out there already 😂
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@HannibalAteMeOut of course they don't and no one would e-stalk! Btw love what you've done with your living room...
Elessar · 26-30, M
@HannibalAteMeOut They have a whole different access to information by collecting it from their very own app as opposed to buying from the Zuck only what the Zuck wants to sell.

In any case, they'd just need to copy the GDPR, if this decision was really motivated by privacy. GDPR violation fines aren't a joke, not even for very large companies; and after reiterated violations there's the ban iirc
NorthernBear · 51-55, M
I think they forgot something kind of important
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@NorthernBear Banning Tik Tok doesn't abrogate Free Speech
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
I’d rather see Fox, Truth social and Twitter banned. The GOP is more dangerous than Tic Toc.
@BackyardShaman Hear, hear ! The former fomented an actual insurrection and attack on our government.
That can’t be said about Tic Toc.
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard right on!!👍
BlueVeins · 22-25
I tend to think that hostile foreign proto-fascist states shouldn't be allowed to control our media. God knows some other tech company at least an inch outside of China will realize how much money they can make by creating a new one, so we won't really have lost anything.

That said, FaceBook is probably a bigger national security threat for other reasons lol. I'm not really the type to say that you can't do one good thing without doing another good thing, but banning the dangerous social media platform that young people use while keeping the dangerous social media platform that old people use might screw up the balance of power, you know? So I guess I'm split.
Yes , better regulations for handling of data and the usage of it , even taxation on companies that profit off of user data could be implemented and used to fund public services , that could both reduce the amount of data that is accessed but also give back to the people who help companies profit off of their personal/sensitive information
JohnOinger · 41-45, M
Hell No I love Tik Tok its fun if they want to ban Tik Tok because of it being a chinese spy app than they need to ban other sites & site apps that are spied by the government
One more thing for the Republicans to take away from us.........as they whine about how those darned Dems just keep stealing our rights.
This is another piece of Republican uselessness. First of all the American Constitution......unlike the Republican Constitution that only has the 2nd Amendment....guarantees freedom of speech under the 1st Amendment. Further there are net neutrality laws....and free enterprise laws that guarantees that TicToc cant be railroaded out of America on Sedition Josh's say so. This is just another Republican sideshow to take eyes off of the fact that governing is not the job Republicans do. The GOP is masters at investigations into nothing, blocking and obstructing. IF.....IF.... this somehow passes the House its dead... and IF.....iF it does pass everyone somehow...the Supreme Court will call it unconstitutional.
No. And I’m really surprised that the people who support actual hate speech or the dissemination of misinformation about deadly diseases (in the name of the first Amendment) would be trying to ban any social media platform. 🤨
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard I think they actually want to get a start on banning certain segments of it, and open the door to states having the right to ban whatever internet media they desire. GOP legislators are already talking about this, of course they are idiots and don’t know how impossible that would be to implement and keep up. Already I have to get my local news from NC, and I live in SC. SC has intimidated local news sources to the point the broadcasters have given up reporting anything unbiased to the Right wing.
@BackyardShaman Wow…that’s mind-blowing. Much of my family lives down South, and I’m told Atlanta and New Orleans are two cities in their respective states that aren’t as heavily censored as everyplace else. 😬
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard definitely true!! SC does not have a mega size city like Atlanta, so it’s easier for the GOP to manipulate everything here.

Why make it easier?
pdockal · 56-60, M
Who cares
Aren't we free to choose for ourselves
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@pdockal You're not allowed to own nuclear weapons
pdockal · 56-60, M
@HoraceGreenley
Seriously !
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@pdockal I know. It sucks.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
I never understood the height for TikTok.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@smileylovesgaming Me neither. Seems an app for kids, 90% of the stuff I see coming out of it is pure cringe

Like, it seems that when I thought Instagram was the worst already the universe wanted to prove me wrong
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
@Elessar mostly just pranks and dance video's.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@smileylovesgaming That's what I meant with cringe 🫢
meJess · F
This just shows how woeful the understanding of the internet is in the senate. VPN’s and preloaded routers for instance. They are either very poorly briefed or have a wider censorship agenda and this is the excuse.
Zeusdelight · 61-69, M
Yes, it is putting too much pressure on Google and Facebook's advertising by being more popular and taking their ad revenue so Government should restrict their market capability in the US.

Of course, that would be socialism, Government intervention in the free Capitalist market.

Oops I should have said it is Chinese Government controlled and aimed to help them takeover the world, and that is bad, just like when the US tried to do it in the 20 th Century and the UK before that.
If it gets banned your TikTok scheming can live on through me @deadgerbil
SarithBorn · 18-21, M
Maybe stricter settings for the underage.
No but they should make privacy measures that limit the app from spying on personal content on people's phones.. phones are basically invasive spyware on everyone.. computers apps and phones and all types of electronics.. 😒

I don't like limiting media. Our media is censored enough already and has slanted bias
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Yes, yet not for just for such obvious reasons. No country should have outside influences on USA platforms or USA corporations. This tendency for multinational corporations is bad. Not just with China. No single multinational corporation should be able to influence multiple number of countries.
spjennifer · 56-60, T
How is it that the Party who "Stands behind our Freedom of Speech" seems to want to abrogate it at every turn when it suits their agenda? Sure, ban it from Government owned devices but as far as private individuals, let them do whatever they want as long as it's nothing illegal...
Disposal · 36-40, M
Idk, tiktok is tiktok but the desire for views is terrible. You got nudity, politics, werdios, finance advisors, transgender awareness, women awareness, men awareness, stupid prime drink vids, it pretty much like the Walmart of social media
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
And then ban Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, And My space..And anythine else that qualifies as social media and can be viewed on a phone.. I want an app free worl so that people dont keep walking unter the wheels of my supermarket trolley..😷
Government phones should only have approved apps.

Also if you're in a position of power , you have to follow that with your personal devices as well.

Just to avoid any sources of possible blackmail.
SW-User
It seems pretty pointless. A lot of the content is fun, a lot is informative, and a lot is abhorrent. It could be banned, but the content would simply migrate to another platform...
akindheart · 61-69, F
yes it should. it is an arm of the CCP and a means to gather intelligence. as for the rest of the platforms, they need reform too.
side note.
i thought it was exeptionally funny when adam shit went onto tiltok to complain about national security..

what a dumbass...
SW-User
No.. I don't think tiktok should be banned. Although I hate cringy tiktok videos but tiktok can be used to spread awareness too. .
Bri89 · 31-35, M
I don't use it, so I don't really care one way or the other. I have a feeling that it won't be banned, however.
plungesponge · 41-45, M
The problem with banning tiktok is it makes money and politicians don't like banning money
SW-User
Why should TikTok be banned, what’s wrong with it?
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@SW-User All the data collected from it is sent to the Chinese government
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
I still don't understand why Vine went away.
twiigss · M
@uncalled4 Yea really. I started watching vines and then like 3 to 4 months later I saw that vines was closing down. Then TikTok replaced it.

Just bring back vines and they can ban TikTok all they want. I don't even use it. Although I do watch YouTube shorts and that is okay.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@twiigss Seems like they replaced a site that featured short 10 second videos with.... a site that featured 10 second videos.
Who gives a sht? We care about TikTok? Really...That's what the Congress is up in arms about...

The
world is
NUTS!

Addendum: I don't use it. It's anxiety and stress inducing and I like things to be like a brook nice and easy and beautiful and slower ....

Life is too fast, this site supports the hyper speed and that's not cool.
SW-User
Ooof I read tiktok, but my brain said twitter

Get rid of them both🤣
