What’s with the limiting of private messages?

Staff Feedback:
There has always been a limit on the number of Private Messages a user can initiate within certain timeframes.
This is a necessary feature on pretty much any social network or communication enabled service.
It helps to reduce spam, harassment, and other unwanted behaviors from those who may abuse the private messaging feature.

Account Reputation, Account Age and other metrics (now also, VIP status), factor into the calculation of a user's active messaging quota.

The majority of users (95-99%) may never experiience such limitations.
It should only affect those who start New PM conversations at a higher than normal rate.

Since when did that start and how long do u need to wait?

Some Examples of "Higher than Normal" usage:

• Creating 10 new conversations in 1 hour, with 10 different users who you have never been in contact with before.

• Creating 200 new conversations in 1 week.

There are different Time-tiers that affect different timeframes.

So, one may be able to initiate 5 conversations in one hour.

Yet they may not be able to initiate 120 (5 x 24) conversations in one day.
(Without VIP)

@Pretzel Piecing together reasons - seems some people send unwanted PMs like with dirty pictures or abusive messages.

I do not know because I seldom initiate messages, even when I do, it typically goes well.

Messaging depends on your "reputation". The amount of messages vary.

Yet if you get VIP it's "near unlimited" ...

This has always been apart of the VIP membership since day one.

Recommend you post more as well as participate more in the open.

PMs do not increase your "reputation". Posting and replying in the groups does.

@JohnOinger really. 😯 They for certain have been messing around with the reputation.

I hardly get any messages and almost never send them. So it really doesn't affect me.

Yet they did mention in site statistics post that most of the traffic is PMs.

Almost like they were complaining about it.

So they changed the reputation metrics. So it possibly is no longer how many posts, possibly leaning more towards replies.

I'll have to be more observant on coin accumulations to tell. One side goes down so does the other side go up.

You're not really supposed to know about it. Yet I've been talking about it for the whole six years that I have been on here.

Every once in a while the admin will mention it now. Such is the case with the new group creation option recently.

Initiating New Private Message conversations with over 70+ different users you have never conversed with before, in under 1 month, is a fairly high amount of conversations to be starting.

We suggest that you try seeking more genuine, long-term communication peers, by looking for users who share matching interests / forums with you, also reading their profile well, before initiating contact.

These limitations are temporary, and its duration varies depending on how many messages the user has sent over the past day / week / month.

I just got it again!!!! I can no longer send messages....this has NEVER happened before. I refuse to be lured to pay for a membership. You definitely just added this not long ago. Why? Not enough advertising revenue that you have to have long-time subscribers to pay for the loss? That's what it is.....

@caesar7 It's ridiculous. How are you supposed to meet people if you can't DM them? And there have been plenty of times when I've sent a DM to an interesting person, and I never hear back because they never return after setting up their account.

The VIP feature previously increased the Quota Limit of the TOTAL Number of Private Message Conversations a user can have.

For Anti-Spam / Harassment measures, priority has recently shifted more towards "Rate Limits" of New PM conversations, rather than "Total Limits".

(Rate-limits also by extension, keeps the Total Limits under control.)

Most users who have caused a lot of harassment via PM messages, never did reach near to the Total PM Limits (which can take years to hit).

Rate-limits have always been in place before, but they were too loose, and ineffective at preventing users from spamming the same type message to 100's of new users each week.

@caesar7 it's pretty much as I mentioned it, with an addition ...

(now also, VIP status)

The Message Limitations apply equally across All Genders and Ages of users.

It is likely very rare that legitimate Female users hit these limits.

Note:

A number of users complaining about the Messaging limits, currently have pending Reports on their Private Messages:

"Reason: Pornographic, unsolicited nudity or other sexually explicit content (1 week ago)"

I wonder if it applies to women also when they contact new users....anybody know?

@caesar7 That being said, sending a DM to everyone in a particular group you're interested in may not be a good idea. I will occasionally check the groups I'm interested in for new members, and if someone looks interesting, I'll send them a DM in the hope of starting a conversation, but I'm selective. If someone has only set up a profile and has no "about me" or posts, I don't DM them.
