It puzzles me how some see blocking as "censorship"…

Censorship is preventing someone from expressing their opinion at all, including to others who may actually want to hear it. When I block I’m simply deciding I (personally) don’t want to hear it, and no longer want to be part of that audience. 😔

If I want to block I block someone because it's not like I'm actually doing to anything to them it's Just that I don't want to see them.

It's not like we are starting a go fund me page to get that person banned from SW.

@Indy74 So true 👍 I posted something a while ago, a pic and a little fun post. Someone started commenting on something that was in the background of the pic. A political argument started between two people. I deleted the argument and commented that bickering comments had been deleted, if people wanted to argue then they could do it in private messages. One person said he believed that "points raised in public posts should be addressed in public" 🙄. He was spoiling a fun post so I blocked him too 😆🤗👍

Many of those who I've blocked were blocked because of racist or anti-LGBTQ statements. I don't need to justify that to those who call that censorship.

@bijouxbroussard Nope. I was just referring to the fact that newspaper revenue comes from both purchases of the paper and from advertising.

@DrWatson I understand. Was trying to find the smallest shred of logic in the person’s assertion. But if the customer pays for the paper, they’re paying for the content, not the ads. 😅

I think the word 'censorship' has strayed pretty far from what it actually is. You see it around social media sites a lot. They seem to forget that companies have the right to create whatever guidelines they see fit. Similar to blocking someone here. It's hardly a freedom of speech issue. It's freedom from speech that you don't want to partake in. Easy call if the option to eliminate is available.

The ones that complain that someone is a coward for blocking are just dramatic and WANT people to not block because they want to keep fighting. So blocking is literally the worst way I can possibly hurt them. It takes away their dopamine kick.

@LadyGrace They can indeed call it whatever they choose, but it isn’t really the same thing. When I block someone, they still have an audience; I’m just not part of it. It’s not like reporting someone or having their content removed so that [b]no one[/b] can read it.
Arguably that’s closer to censorship, which isn’t always a bad thing, to be sure.

For sure, especially when the individual seeing it that way has no problem blocking others from their [b]own[/b] lives.

Even though I have always been hesitant to use the block option myself, I've long understood why others are not. When it come to "censorship" on a social media site, simply blocking those one doesn't wish to see or interact with is defintely not [b]that[/b].

I compare my blocking to switching off a radio or TV programme that I don't want to hear/see. "Censorship" would be ordering the radio station/TV company to take it off air. Blocking is just turning off the radio/TV. We have the right to do that 👍

People's use of language seems to be getting sloppier and sloppier, particularly when it comes to "trigger" words they use as insults. Because as word can create a reaction, they'll use it whether it applies or not, either to encourage extreme reactions or just because they got their feelings bruised and want to strike out.

I recall making a declaration that I no longer wanted to hear misandrist speech. I'm just tired of it. That upset a bunch of people, somehow. Too bad. I don't want to see it on my feed. Got a problem with that? I won't miss you!
