Well welcome to SW!! It's a mix bag around here. If you replied and didn't get anything back I would simply let it go and not worry about it. If you engage I am sure you will find your niche here.

I had messages like that before. Hello. And I reply back with, Hi, how's it going? That's how I grew up. Being outgoing. Someone says Hello to me, I don't see any harm in replying to that.

Now if my reply opens up some thing where the person tries scamming me, then they get a block. I just try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt first.

Be glad that they just say hello and don't ask you for nudes.

Yes, this is a thing here on SW. As soon as there a new female face, some males just jump on the occasion to want to trade nudes.

Just be cautious with whom you chat privately. Not everyone is who they seem to be. If you take a minimum of precautions, you will be fine. Welcome to SW and be safe.

I ignore any stranger who leaves a message of "hello" and nothing more.

It is probably the case that they send those messages off in bulk to lots of people, and then they wait and see who will answer.

Often, the people who do that are hoping for sexual interactions.

If you are anti-social, you might consider setting up a "message introduction" explaining that you will not engage in messages with anyone until you feel you have gotten to know them fairly well through public posts and comments. Anyone who starts to message you will see that introduction first.

One other thing you should know: if someone messages you for the first time, that person cannot send another message until you answer. So if you never answer, you will never receive a message from that person again.
