England were awful

England were abysmal. Clueless. Useless. Boring.
The USA should have minced them.
Now it's all down to England Wales next week - and anything could happen then.
I know many English fans think, mistakenly, that football was invented in England, but the only thing coming home is the team, the fans and the hopes of a nation.
That was pathetic.

USA stopped us playing with their pressing football they were the best team on the night. The 1 point all but takes us through to next stage we hopefully will play better then !!!
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
@Barny52 I never thought I'd live to see the day when a Brit actually called the US men's soccer team the better team. The women's team, sure, but the men's?
Barny52 · 56-60, M
@DunningKruger better team while we had an off day !!! No they were better on the day
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@DunningKruger Credit where credit is due. The US football team were better than we were and now they're through to the next round. Best of luck to them.

It was a bad game for us. No creative play. Really flat. No pressing. No aggression.
Southgate needs to rethink his team. Tough game against Wales on Tuesday.
They need to start with foden grealish and trent
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@Gangstress No aggression or passing. England played by numbers, like a training session.
Longleggedlady · 31-35, F
I get banned from watching as they lose if I am in the room but they almost managed to do it in my absence from what I was told. There are some of the supposed best footballer's in the world in that team and at club level they excel but funny thing is they flop with international shirt on? Perhaps they need Jurgen or Pep to kick their arses into actually playing football and winning games
Raymuundo · 46-50, M
I watched this morning. USA seemed to dominate possession. US are not bad but England should put two goals past them given their calibre of players.
Raymuundo · 46-50, M
@LizOwen I think they were scared but think they have the measure of Wales.
Raymuundo · 46-50, M
Ie scared to lose.
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@Raymuundo Maybe so- we'll see on Tuesday.
AbbeyP · 70-79, F
Thankfully we didn’t watch it.
At least they didn't lose! Imagine being a Qatar fan. Your country bought their place at the World Cup, at the expense of some countries who couldn't get there. Then they get knocked out before the end of the first round. But more embarrassment , I think, on FIFA for allowing it to happen. They are a monumental joke,
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@jackieash27 Nothing to try - Qatar won the Asia Cup in 2019 and hosted the competition in 1988 and 2011. In their own backyard, they can be a decent team. This year they came against better teams on the day - that's football. It's a world wide game with universal appeal.
@LizOwen Try to recall Qatar's World Cup history. Take as long as you like.
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@jackieash27 I believe it's their first time in the World Cup. They qualify as hosts- as England did in 1966, the only time we won. Spreading the game can only be positive: football is not a closed shop, thank goodness. In 74, Zaire were the first African team to enter after winning the Africa Cup. Let's hope that European and South American teams can be challenged by Asian, Australasian, North American and African nations to create a truly 'World' Cup.
Miram · 31-35, F
My partner is American. I will make them do extra errands because of your loss. I hope it makes you all feel better.
AbbeyP · 70-79, F
Do extra errands yourself! 😀@Miram
Miram · 31-35, F
@AbbeyP No 😃
Abstraction · 61-69, M
England I think invented more sports than any other country so that they can be beaten in all of them. To make up for colonising everyone I think.
Well done on the T20 World Cup though.
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@Abstraction I have heard that. Why stay in a class-ridden country with no social mobility and where you have to touch your forelock to an arrogant shit of a landowner when you can live in a much freer country?
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@LizOwen Are you Scottish? My old Canadian aunt born in 1800s told me the family story of why our ancestor moved to Canada from Scotland. One of our ancestors got ripped off by his own brother in the early 1800s (asked him to write a cheque when he didn't have his glasses on and emptied his bank account.) So he said to his wife. (and Auntie Ruby did the accent beautifully) 'That's it. We're getting oot. I would'n' breathe the air of the same country as that man.'
This is I think probably most accurate historical account of the invention of golf.

@Abstraction No, I'm English. My husband was Scottish, from Dundee.
benJohnson99 · 18-21, M
its tournament football England were bad but every team has a bad game just look at Germany but its avoiding defeat in that game, England will be far to strong for Wales and will move deeper into the tournament and hopefully will improve.
benJohnson99 · 18-21, M
@LizOwen Yes of course they will be but their talisman Bale to me looks half a yard short and past his best because England drop points against the US I think they will go for it against Wales to ensure qualification.
Gangstress · 41-45, F
@benJohnson99 bale is awful.
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@benJohnson99 Both teams will be up for it but England has a huge player pool to pick - about twenty times Wales's - and should have better players. Wales might have more fire, though.
PSuss1 · 56-60, M
Highs and lows of tournament football, but agree that was a dismal performance. GS has now put pressure on himself to change things up for the Wales game ...but showed in the Euros he doesn't like changing it up, so will be interesting to see what he does.

Not sure Wales have got the legs to stifle us like the US did but we do need to turn up now.
Northwest · M
It's a tie, but I feel the US scored a big win. It's a psychological booster to soccer programs in the US, a game that remains a very distant third for us.
MartinII · 70-79, M
Those adjectives could have been used about England’s performances in some of the group games in 1966. I doubt, though, if history will repeat itself.
Harriet03 · 41-45, F

🤨
Golfer · 61-69, M
I enjoyed it but our team had trouble putting a shot actually on frame! And yes…I’m a US fan!
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@Golfer I think both teams had trouble finding the goal.
Markmywurdz · 56-60, M
I’ll care again when they desist with their “taking the knee” bs.
wonkywinky · 51-55, M
Really?They topped the group.
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@wonkywinky So they should - they defeated a nation with a less than impressive football history and another with less than twentieth the population, while drawing with a nation where football is only a minority sport. Given our resources, we were terrible.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@wonkywinky Against very weak sides. Similarly, Senegal were awful in the first knockout match.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
We were awful. Still, I'm not worried about Wales.
Strictmichael75 · 61-69, M
Another failure
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@Strictmichael75 Very much so.
Back to reality, I am afraid.
