This is how mad we are in England…

A lot of our brethren have got hot under the collar because the new interim head coach of the England football (soccer) team refuses to sing the national anthem…( a song about kowtowing to a monarchy and a god that I don’t believe in.)

But some are fuming!

Either the world’s gone mad, or I have

Southgate sung but didn't meet the expectations of many

Lee Carsley should be judged by how well he performs with the three lions and not how well he sings on the pitch

If it's a portrait being removed from somewhere, somebody not singing something they 'should' or something else of teetering insignificance, you can guarantee some tabloid editor will say 'Run this as the headline!'

I am from England. Kent, to be specific, and I only watch when we're in the WC.

@AndysAttic What is a strange place to watch?

@Aysel The WC.

@AndysAttic I had no idea it was considered weird to watch the World Cup.

The point is one of etiquette, not whether you believe in monarchs and deities, but I understand he would not sing the Irish Anthem when their coach, either..

I learnt this morning, his excuse for not singing either the UK's National Anthem, nor presumably that of Ireland when working for its team.

He reckons it would disturb his pre-match preparations.

Really?

No, I don't believe it either - or is he implying he is so disorganised he leaves everything to the last minute so can't a spare a couple of minutes for the anthem?
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@SW-User Well, that may be, but we don't know if he thinks that. We can't read his mind.

Reportedly though, he refused to sing his own country's anthem, too.

@ArishMell altogether possible. Frankly it’s not a big deal for me personally
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@SW-User No, nor me really as I am not a sports fan!

Perhaps he just hadn’t learned the words. It’s less essential than being a competent leader.

You’re right, the world has gone mad. I don’t sing the national anthem either….

[willg3333] 🤔i think this was for political reasons nothing more🤔they once was tory and he was then minister for wales at the time and they where singing the welsh nation anthem . it showed a close up of john redwood and he was sort of miming perhaps he never knew the words and maybe this guy was the same maybe at the england game lol 😆

Not sure there's any argument that politics rules sport as it does everything else at the moment.
And the national anthem (pretty much like every other country's) was written at a time to represent strength in the face of potential adversity.
