Anyone else think Oppenheimer wasn’t very good?

I really wanted to like it, too.
helenS · 36-40, F
I had read Sherwin's Oppenheimer biography, which the movie is based on, before I saw the film, and I have to say it's a very good adaptation. Some say the movie's too long but I beg to disagree. I would have watched it even if it were 12 hours long. People discussing communism and plutonium-based implosion bombs. Wow.
Bumbles · 51-55, M
@helenS I wanted more science!
helenS · 36-40, F
@Bumbles Yes me too but the movie wasn't about the Manhattan project, it was a biopic about Oppie.
By the way, if you want to know more about how to make the bomb, read the "Los Alamos Primer", written by Robert Serber, Oppie's postdoc. The book is based on five lectures Serber gave at Los Alamos, really excellent material, it was de-classified in the 1960s.
I think anybody going into it expecting to see what wasn't ultimately shown will be disappointed. I personally think it's full Hollywood propaganda and is obscuring the truth on a multitude of levels.. but what else is new
@LordShadowfire Believing somebody is a medical professional because of their institutionalized title is the first mistake. It's a business, and you are their product. Same goes for politics.
@GoToTheCompound Okay, so in your expert opinion, what should we do about this disease that has already killed over a million Americans? Nothing?
@LordShadowfire We're just being told it killed that many people, do you know for a fact that many people died from it? Would you bet your life that a million people died directly because of it? All of the real casualties either had severe preexisting health conditions or developed severe health conditions after being vaccinated. You can think for yourself, or not.

I think it was too long but my man doesn't agree so there's that. But on the way home from the cinema I was thinking about this, and I think that if the film was told in chronological order it would've been less confusing (especially for people who aren't from the USA and aren't very familiar with all the political words), but also that chronologically the tension arcs would be identical. My man agreed so there's that lol
Bumbles · 51-55, M
@Michmich Totally agree it should have been chronological.
helenS · 36-40, F
@Bumbles Ha! I think that was one of the film's strong point. It was a collage. It was non-linear.
Bumbles · 51-55, M
@helenS I agree it was definitely a collage…

Ohhh edgy.

SPOLIERS

I did like it but I don't think its a classic. I'm a Nolan danboy and I don't think its his best.

It really dragged towards the end. The McCarthyite witchhunt side of the story with Downey Junior was a bit interesting but it was given way too much time. The real climax happened 2/3rds in when they did the make or break test to see if the bomb worked. That was such a well constructed dramatic section but after that it was an anti-climax.

Cilian Murhy's acting performance was Oscar worthy.

I did like the movie but I agree its overrated by most critics.
Bumbles · 51-55, M
@Burnley123 I agree the McCartyite portion went on too long, and wasn’t the third act of much.

The 30 minutes before the test was great. Loved the Truman scene, too.

I agree what some have said that showing the destruction after Hiroshima would be “gore” porn, but would have done more to show actual Japanese.

The female characters were underutilized.

And WAY TOO LOUD!

Liked Cilian Murphy…Peaky Blinders fanboy here.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Bumbles Basically, Murphy's whole career has been Nolan and Peaky Blinders. This is not a criticism!
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
@Burnley123 I feel exactly the same way. You summarized it well.
DoubleRings · 51-55, F
Horrible. Walked out in the first hour. Gave me a headache.
Bumbles · 51-55, M
@DoubleRings desperately needed 30 mins cut.
DoubleRings · 51-55, F
@Bumbles I never walk out of movies. Even my hubby who was genuinely interested in watching the movie didn’t like it. But he watched the whole thing - I couldn’t
Bumbles · 51-55, M
@DoubleRings I’ll definitely walk out of movies when I don’t like them, but stuck it out with Oppenheimer (we also with someone).
hunkalove · 61-69, M
He wasn't a nice guy. I can't imagine watching a movie about him.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
i havent seen it..but npr had a woman on whose real name is barbara oppenheimer..kinda fun, given the battle btwn it, and barbie, at the box office. i just think that dude from peaky blinders is overrated. i do not, at all, see the appeal.

I still haven't watched it and I'm a huge Nolan fan
blegh the trailer was enough
DDonde · 31-35, M
I enjoyed watching it. Some scenes are great and the acting is great, but I felt the screenplay and the overall direction was flawed. There are some great scenes, but I felt it jumps and jerks around too much while also trying to force in an overall narrative. And some of the characters and scenes did not feel very historically authentic. But it was enjoyable to watch in theaters as something to do for a day.
Bumbles · 51-55, M
@DDonde I didn’t like the three narratives jumping about, either. Didn’t serve the story, although there wasn’t much in the way of real story.
I still haven't seen it. I'm probably missing out, because I'm told the only way to really experience is in IMAX, but with all these anti-vax conspiracy crackheads still running around, I don't trust crowds of people.
Bumbles · 51-55, M
@LordShadowfire I didn’t like it with IMAX. Way too loud. Better to wait.

Don't even know what itis
Bumbles · 51-55, M
@Lilnonames A big movie
