Why aren’t arcades big anymore?

Are they not profitable

Just seems like a cool place to hangout. The cool lights and colors and noises
WillaKissing · 56-60
They were a great place to hang out and meet people, but the advancement of the internet Xbox and all the online gaming it definitely killed the arcades.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
@WillaKissing i have a claw machine, coin dozer and golden tee golf game i'm trying to sell to a friend that owns a bar
WillaKissing · 56-60
@MarineBob Good luck, in a bar I can see it being used.
Bartleby · 51-55, M
They seem to be making a comeback. My son who is a major gamer loves seeing and playing the older coin-op games.

Can’t get him into pinball, though! 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣
MethDozer · M
@Bartleby Same with my nephew. He never can wrap his around the fact that there are objectives and ways to achieve them on the pinball machines. No matter what I show him or explain to him he thinks you're just suposed to whack the ball willy nilly and hop it doesn't fall out of play.
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
Still quite a few nearby me

I like skee-ball and air hockey hahah
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@WaryWitchWandering I forgot about Dave and busters a lot of people like Dave and busters

I’ve never been is it the same thing?
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
@DeluxedEdition same thing but more expensive

It’s kinda like adult chuckeecheese
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
@DeluxedEdition foods good and there is beer

It’s often way too crowded
LookingForTheSummer · 31-35, M
It will be a wonderful idea to bring arcades back!
I think the main reason might be that people can play games at home or whatever. But we can do lots of things like watching movies or eating or drinking at home, too. But going out and doing these activities with friends is another experience.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@LookingForTheSummer I agree it’s basically the same reason why people don’t buy DVDs anymore Netflix and streaming killed DVDs

It makes sense. It’s a gradual thing

I think for going out and hanging out it would be wonderful to bring it back

My friends and I went out a few weekends ago to this club and they had a GameCube and they were playing Mario cart.

Why can’t we do that 😭😭😭😭😭
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@DeluxedEdition In the 1980s, we didn't have video games that could even shine the shoes of the arcade ones. Now, of course, the games are killer and we don't have to burn 6 dollar gas to pay even more money to play. Operating a business is expensive--probably worse than it was 40 years ago--and I don't think people are coming back. Arcades were big in malls....remember those?
MethDozer · M
@LookingForTheSummer Another big blow to them was the rise of structured and monitored play for kids and helicopter fear based parenting.
Classified · M
A lot of people can get their own videogames at home these days where once you bought it, you can play for free (besides the electricity). I think it's something like that. 🤔
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@Classified you don’t think 90s arcade games will be fun (profitable) to bring back like original Mortal Kombat and stuff?

It’s more less a hangout idea. Bring twenty ones and play and fvvk around with your friends
Classified · M
@DeluxedEdition They would probably be fun with the right group, but I don't expect them to be profitable. At least not in the quantity they used to exist. A former colleague of mine still went to the arcade often to do dance games. So a number of them still manage to make ends meet.
True, I think DaveNBuster took over.
@Darksideinthenight2 what you talking about? kids go there all the time

@Darksideinthenight2 they still play games
Because people play video games at home now.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@quitwhendone not the kinds you can play at the arcade 🥺
@DeluxedEdition Yeah, arcades have pinball machines.
Eternity · 26-30, M
Great place to do drugs and have sex in the bathroom
Zaphod42 · 51-55, M
Why would anyone go feed quarters into a machine and have to play standing up using controls that god knows what degenerate has touched before you when you can get a console and play from the comfort of your own couch?
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@Zaphod42 we do it with loads of things

Vending machines. Card readers. Kiosks especially the ones with keyboards

If you are worried about that maybe bring some sanitizer with you or those little wipes and wipe the machine down 😏
LookingForTheSummer · 31-35, M
@Zaphod42 So you touch literally nothing when you are out? 🤔
Lostpoet · M
It was causing gambling problems
spjennifer · 61-69, T
Times and technology have changed, kids have other interests now like social media and game consoles that are way more advanced than arcade games were. Most arcade games aren't morpg's either so "boringgg" for most of the kids.
iamelijah · 26-30, M
They are not profitable as it used to be. People are playing games with pc, psp, nitendo, etc.

This is like a jukebox or, 8 tracks, vinyl, cd or cassette where they are no longer attract people since we got music apps to listening song and music.
Casheyane · 31-35, F
They still are. But I wish there is a separate one for adults. That way we won't have to be embarrassed lining up with kids haha.

But there are adult playgrounds (like pitball and the parkour stuff).
ChiefJustWalks · 26-30
There's this super popular bar downtown that's an arcade & a bar at the same time. It's like Dave & Busters but more alcohol oriented.

So fun on a random Friday night
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
kids are too busy laying in their beds all way playing with smart phones...

they're too lazy to go outside & exercise, let alone go to an arcade where one actually has to move around...
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
Not profitable with the rise of personal gaming systems and large screen televisions.

Why go to an arcade when I play my PS5 on a 75” UHD TV.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
It's not really a thing anymore...the young men and some women who would fill up these places now all play games at home online with their friends.
Slade · 56-60, M
They were fun as a kid. Then I didn't understand why my dad watched us so closely there.

Like he was expecting sleaze😱
MarineBob · 56-60, M
Unless you own the building and machines most cities want a yearly fee (tax) per machine
VampireOfDesire · 26-30, M
I think they not as profitable anymore.
We got some kinda arcade bars around here tho.
chrisCA · M
The same reason Triple XXX theaters closed down. Technology.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
You would have loved the late 70s/early 80s. My parents actually owned an arcade that was part of their roller rink. Pinball and classic video games. As a teen, I wanted little more(except chicks of course).
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@DeluxedEdition There are trade-offs, but they're pretty good. For instance, having to look for blank tape and setting a VCR to record TV programs....lame. DVRs are awesome...except that you can't save programs.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@uncalled4 We were behind we actually used a lot of stuff like that and never upgraded. We had so many vhs tapes it looked like a library

I would pop a tape in and watch a random movie and hope for the best lol 😆

Pretty sure my entire family in Georgia still has bubble tvs

I must admit when Netflix came out and you could watch your shows whenever you wanted that was pretty cool🤭
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@DeluxedEdition Streaming is the future. The idea of sitting in front of a TV at a certain time to see a show is going away.
pancakeslam · 41-45, M
there's an arcade bar a block from me and a pinball bar not too far away. most of those games are decades old
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@pancakeslam what’s the scene look like? Who comes and plays? Is it a weekend thing? 👀 🍿 is it profitable
pancakeslam · 41-45, M
@DeluxedEdition mostly a young to middle aged crowd. Nothing unusual. It's open every night and pretty busy. They serve pizza and snacks as well so I'd say a it's 20s to 30s mostly. one middle aged moron got mad at me for setting my drink on the pinball machine
We have a few here in Dallas. Free Play has 100 games. Mostly retro and some pinball machines. You pay like $10 and everything is set to free play so you can play all day.

There's a few but they all lost that dark and seedy vibe and lighting that made the great.

Kids and people just have note home options and also most gamers don't like arcade style games anymore. Most gamers aren't interested in actual games anymore and are interested in simulators like FPS and sandbox games or into interactive cinematics. 90% of video games aren't really games any games these days.
