Why didn't I tell the guy sitting in my window seat to move?

I am on a plane. I buy my tickets early in order to secure a window seat. I don't like the aisle.
I have priority so I board pretty early. I get to my seat and some guy is strapped in tight.

Im not afraid of anyone but sometimes I just choose the path of least resistance. So I said hello and he seemed friendly enough so I just sat down in the aisle seat. At least its not a middle seat.
But then Im wondering did he really not realize that he didn't purchase a window seat?
Abstraction · 61-69, M
It could be either. I simply say, sorry, can you check your seat number because I think that might be my seat. A minority (yes, that's statistically correct) of people in the world are selfish and might try it on.
Carazaa · F
@Abstraction that is a good way to approach it!
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@DiliMarky I get a lot further without aggression. Assertiveness isn't weaker, it's more effective and makes for calm living. And just a seat? My regular travel includes lots of 14 hour flights as part of 25-35 hour journeys. I choose my seat carefully. It's not just a seat.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@Abstraction foh if I’m gonna pay extra for a seat and some freeloader is going to take my seat because “it’s Just a seat get over it” i can use that same logic against you so get the fuck up 😂😂😂😂 @DiliMarky
SledgeHammer · 46-50, M
I get so annoyed when someone does shit like that. They know what the hell they're doing but they act stupid...
DiliMarky · M
@SledgeHammer Tell them again bro
SledgeHammer · 46-50, M
@DiliMarky oh yea that's me...I would have said"Youre in my seat pal!" Off the bat
LadyGrace · 70-79
@SledgeHammer They sure do.
GJOFJ3 · 61-69, M
He knew he didn’t have a window seat. He took a chance you wouldn’t confront him about it
Next time make them move
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@GJOFJ3 I have a soft heart sometimes and it makes me indecisive but you might be right.
GJOFJ3 · 61-69, M
@REMsleep I love a soft heart but hate when they get taken advantage of
Be polite, stand there and scan your ticket again to make sure you are correct, then inquire as to "I believe you have my seat, could you check your ticket?"

If that doesn't work, then get a flight attendant and ask for an upgrade to first class by stating that you asked him nicely and he refused ("now you are afraid he 'could' become confrontational")..... works every time because FA's don't need or want the drama.... (BTW: they also have the power to have him removed from the plane before takeoff).
LadyGrace · 70-79
That was just rude of him. I think i would have said, "Excuse me, sir....I have a reserved, assigned seat, next to the window."
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
@LadyGrace WWJD?
LadyGrace · 70-79
@Harmonium1923 When one pays good money for a seat, they should be able to sit in it. What she did was really sweet. I'm just saying. If she was comfortable with giving it up, that's up to her. Just because she takes up for her rights doesn't mean shes unchristian.
familyfunguy · 56-60, M
You know you can let the flight attendants know if he refuses to move, right? You didn't buy that premium seat for him. I'd love yourself more and just do what's right.
DiliMarky · M
@familyfunguy wrong! she should of launched him out the seat and slapped him across the face
DiliMarky · M
you should of said 'move yo stinky, dirty, no window seat buyer ass, outta my seat'. If he said no, grab his arm and catapult his ass out the seat. Situation sorted, thank me later
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
@DiliMarky How many planes you been kicked off of?
DiliMarky · M
@Thevy29 I'm banned from the Denver International Airport and the O'Hare International Airport at the moment. Why you ask?
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
@DiliMarky 😅
tallpowerhouseblonde · 36-40, F
You really could have asked him to move.If he refused then you could have got an air hostess to deal with him.On planes everyone should be in the seat they paid for and were assigned to.He could even have been tossed off the plane for his behaviour. The airlines will not tolerate passengers sitting in seats they were not allocated.

This world doesn't works the way we want. There are lot of difficulties & displeasures one can see in life.

Help people learn this lesson starting from small things. It will certainly prepare them for bigger difficulties in their life. So, in a way you will be helping them.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I guess people will hate me for this but if I was in that position and felt like he might refuse to change the seat or even be rude to me I'd probably invent a lie like for example that I tend to get sick if I don't sit by the window. 🤷‍♀️
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@CrazyMusicLover No, I don't hate you ;) but you can achieve the same thing with gentle assertiveness.
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
You were kind but it’s also perfectly fine to ask people to move to the right seat. I travel a lot and sometimes sit in the wrong seat by accident.
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@Harmonium1923 Me too. It's easy to do.
ineedadrink · 51-55, M
You can't know without asking who has purchased what seat. But you would have been absolutely justified in telling him that he is in your seat, happens all the time.
Ambroseguy80 · 56-60, M
At the price of airline tickets…. I would get the seat I deserve and paid for!
you dont you go to a stewart and let her do it.. you bought your ticket . other wise it is like being forced to sit in the back of the bus.. stand up for yourself.. oh ya i am in a mood today.. sorry for dumping. mark
ABCDEF7 · M
If they are humble enough to admit that they are sitting on the wrong seat and request me to sit there, I may let them sit there. But if they think, they are smart and other is fool, then I like to clear their Illusions.
What a jackass! I hope karma gets his ass. You are a better person than most.
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
@SweetNSassy People make honest mistakes sometimes.

Because youre polite.
Id just kindly say. I did opt for the window seat so if you don't mind may i have my seat back?
Ynotisay · M
If it was assigned seating, he knew he didn't buy a window seat. He didn't care about the person who did.
Carazaa · F
🤗 He might not have realized he was sitting in the wrong seat. If you were in someone else's seat and didn't realize it would you want them to tell you? I recommend to tell them nicely that it is your seat. If they purposefully took a seat then maybe they hope that no one would notice or be too shy to say anything because they are a jerk. Either way I smile and say "Sir, I think that's my seat" 🙂
I've only flown a few times. Realized I took someone's window seat by accident
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
I would just told him he was in my seat
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
He may not have realized.
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
"Excuse me, sir, but I believe you're in my seat."
DiliMarky · M
@DunningKruger "well, let me tell you something honey tree. I sat in this seat first so it is my seat, got that?"

Like your comment tho🤣
helenS · 36-40, F
Aisle is better anyway, because you've got more space for your legs! 😏
You should be grateful.
@helenS “Grateful" for having her seat stolen ? Ridiculous. 🙄
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@helenS I'm 5ft1 I don't need any space. And thats obviously not the point anyway.

It’s been awhile since I’ve flown (2014) but I’m guessing that had you wanted to pursue the matter a flight attendant might’ve been able to assist and then it would’ve been clearer whether the person was trying to get over or had honestly thought they could sit in any of the seats on the row.
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@bijouxbroussard You are correct but I don't like to bother people when everyone is boarding, a baby was crying. I saw a lady do this just last week ( ask about a seat dispute) when I flew out and the flight attendant seemed so nice on the outside but so turned her back and rolled eyes at the woman where only me and another passenger could see. I overthink stuff.
There's a good chance he didn't purchase any particular seat and just misread the letter. Interpreting which seat is which requires some concentration, which is something that people travelling don't often have
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP I took that into consideration thats mostly why I didn't say anything but he was a little inconsiderate as time went on spreading his legs and turning sideways in his seat to nap and hes s big guy.
@REMsleep yeah, I'm afraid travelling with a service that is marginally lucrative, like airlines, requires some patience. If it was me, I'd just be glad no kid behind me was kicking my seat! 🤷‍♂️
pancakeslam · 41-45, M
well the thing is your could just tell him to get up
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@pancakeslam Yes, I know that I could. I have done it before. Sometimes I just don't feel like asking someone to move and certainly not after I already have sat next to him for 5 minutes.
My thing is if I knew that he had done it intentionally then I certainly would ask him to move.
