How would you motivate a kid who got bad grades in his/her 5th standard?

zeggle · 61-69, M
Talking from a personal point. I never went to school. I couldn't read properly or do mathematics until i was in my 30's It brought me to the conclusion that it's impossible to teach anyone anything and you can only learn from what you want to learn to know. I know that might be controversial to some. And they may well be right. In some or many, that's the absolute, to get qualifications from university, then get a well paid job, some guys and girls make more money without an education than those with one. Subsequently. Motivation, is a thing in ones own mind.

[c=800000] I can talk a lot about it
I've so many memories of being a failure and I'll try to motivate with the lessons I learnt [/c]

First I would tell them it's not a big deal. Then I would listen to him/her what they think is the reason. Then I will work towards solving their problems so that they can perform better. Then assure them that now the scores will be better, so that they can have the confidence.

5th standard?

Must not be in the North or South America.

@DeWayfarer Yes. In some part of world they do call it standard. I hope you got the meaning of standard here. That is more important.

@ABCDEF7 I'll say this. My mother was born and raised in Romania. She went through what was literally translated to English as the third grade.

My father was raised in Czechoslovakia. He himself translated the term as the equivalent to the ninth grade.

I must assume you are referring to the fifth grade. Yet world wide it still translates as some type of "grade".

Even when I entered college my testing put me at grade 13.1. Meaning my education level was at the equivalent to the first year of college.

@DeWayfarer You guessed it right. 👍
Find out what matters to this kid. Make a version of that his or her reward. That is a motivator.
Poor grades aren't always a motivation issue.

Reward them for doing well.
