How would you motivate a kid who got bad grades in his/her 5th standard?

Talking from a personal point. I never went to school. I couldn't read properly or do mathematics until i was in my 30's It brought me to the conclusion that it's impossible to teach anyone anything and you can only learn from what you want to learn to know. I know that might be controversial to some. And they may well be right. In some or many, that's the absolute, to get qualifications from university, then get a well paid job, some guys and girls make more money without an education than those with one. Subsequently. Motivation, is a thing in ones own mind.
