I'm a terrible person.

My cat is dying and I feel like a terrible person for my thoughts and actions. He is only five years old and is sick with an infection, anemia, and liver disease. He is so skinny and slowly wasting away. I tried to bring him to the vet, but because I'm not very well off financially, I could only afford to get him some medicine. This is the first reason why I feel like I'm not a good person, because I can't give him the treatment he needs.

As he slowly dies, instead of fighting with him, I have started accepting that he's nearing the end of his life. I can only do what I can by giving him his medicine. Today, I even thought about plans to bury him - where I could bury him and how. I feel terrible for having these thoughts. I've even considered getting a new cat and trying to convince myself it's for the best, but I feel guilty for even thinking about it.

I hate myself for having these thoughts, for considering alternatives to my cat's life.

Unfortunately if you take on responsibility for a pet you must ensure you have the financials to be able to take care for it. All in all I would say it’s probs not best to take on another pet in replacement of this one.

I would say if it does come to having your cat put down, please stay with him in his final moments. I’ve read a lot of stories from vets that people tend to leave their pets in that moment because it’s too sad to be there, but think of your kitty and how much he’ll need you if it comes to that
You really ought to put him down. Poor thing (both of you!!) , don't let him waste away.

Give yourself a break, you’re not a terrible person because you can’t afford expensive vet bills. It feels awful, I know. I had an amazing cat when I was 23, he got really sick and I couldn’t afford the vet bills either. I had him put down so he wasn’t suffering anymore but man I grieved for him for 2 years. You love him, he knows it, just help him be comfortable until he passes. 🤗🤗

In this situation we should think of what's the least suffering for the pet. That's our responsibility. Your feelings and ego comes second. Put him out of his misery there's absolutely no point in dragging this on til he dies by himself.

Put the cat down. Its the right thing to do.Bury him and have a funeral if it helps you with the grieving process. But don't get a new one untill you are ready-both emotionally and financially. They actually sell health insurance for pets. When you are ready to get a new pet,it would be wise to have them covered.

As hard as it is, put the cat to sleep

I put my cat down in 2019. It was a hard decision but she was sick and wasting away, and in a lot of pain. I paid extra and had her creamated, and I have her ashes. Once in a while she lets me know that she is around.

if his liver disease isn't treated he will definitely die, but it will be slow and painful. He's just going to waste away if you don't do anything...maybe you should put him to sleep

Put him down, no?

I will say that the death of a pet really hits differently when you are responsible for making the decisions.

I would advise against leaping to getting a new cat right away. It's going to hurt but you need time to grieve before beginning a new relationship.

You have to do what it is that feels right. I personally would put him down. Especially knowing there's nothing you can do to save him

I saw your update. My condolences on your loss. I would not recommend getting a new car immediately. Give yourself time to grieve.
