What is a REAL man, please?

(Please, suppress any dic-pic mentality, just for this Q at least. Serious Q.)
bijouxbroussard · F Best Comment
I hate that term, and it annoys me when people use it seriously.
Basically, “man” is a neutral term for an adult male.
Masculinity/manliness is subjective and a often cultural assessment.
Admired qualities are responsibility, maturity, patience and courage.
And they exist in both genders.

@bijouxbroussard Hear hear!
@Valentine Thank you very much for BA. 🙏🏽

Why is everyone so obsessed with this question these days?

There is no such thing as a 'real' man... there are just MEN in all of their diversity.

Some good, some bad, some macho, some effeminate, some clever, some stupid.

You can't restrict us all to the same template.
Valentine · M
@Quizzical Sorry, not particularly obsession, not meant to be anyway.

It arose out of another Q where I asked about being a Dad. I thought the answer there deserved a higher profile.

Hope this answers your initial frustration?
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@Valentine I don't mean you specifically, lol... It's just this is about the fourth time it's been asked in a week, and it crops up ALL the time.
Valentine · M
@Quizzical Ahh, my bad then. Apologies. If you have the time and inclination, how do the answers here compare to the other three. Or is that pushing your patience... Lol.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
One that takes care of himself, and the family that he created. One that's is loving caring and reaches and shows that to his offspring
SW-User
A man who takes care of his responsibilities without having to be asked.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@SW-User bingo!
SW-User
A concept that’s being forgotten by many. Being a man comes with its responsibilities. It’s not about how many guns you can own in the middle of no where, but to stand up for what’s right even when you have no weapons to defend yourself. Take responsibility of those who love you and who you love, protect them whenever they need it and provide people who are directly dependent on you.
Valentine · M
@SW-User Thank you.

I think people who are real are helpful.

People who are real fail but pick themselves up again.

People who are real are truthful to themselves and others.

People who are real try things.

People who are real love.

People who are real are strong when they need to be a kind the rest of the time.

I think we've all met men and women who are real. There really isn't that much difference between them.
Valentine · M
@SW-User This is just a great answer, thank you. You seem to be a kind hearted guy. Ever considered that as a username? D'oh Valentine, keep up!!!!
Rhodesianman · 56-60, M
Ok well the way I see it a real man treats women as his equal but also treats them with respect and be the perfect gentleman .If hes married bring home the bacon and split the childcare housework etc 50/50 .Treats a woman as a person with her own mind and a life of her own .She is not property and should never be treated as such .

@MarmeeMarch Why the gay remark?

sciguy18 · M
I fear I am woefully unqualified to answer.
Valentine · M
@sciguy18 At the risk of putting you on a pedestal my good friend, look in the mirror. You will see a real man. #justsaying

In reality, a real man is just a male. If you are taking real man as to mean someone who fills a traditionally masculine role in western society, then I like to go by something I call the Four Ps. Though these traits are stated as being what is applicable to Real Man, they are generally for everyone. The way I wrote them is more to co-opt a term typically used by toxic masculinity to emphasize what really should be respected from traditional male stereotypes.

A real man is a Producer
A real man seeks to create, not to destroy
A real man will efficiently deconstruct and salvage when destruction is necessary - like recycling
A real man builds up whatever they encounter, be it object, concept, or person
A real man is a Protector
A real man will stand up for the basic rights of others, regardless of the identity of the other
A real man will exhaust all peaceful options before moving to violence, and will further restrict violence to the minimum necessary to the defense of self or others
A real man is a Provider
A real man seeks to provide for themselves to the best of their ability
A real man seeks to provide for their families to the best of their ability
A real man seeks to provide for their communities to the best of their ability
A real man seeks to provide for the world to the best of their ability
A real man is a Person
A real man is comprised of both mind and heart and must balance logic and emotion
A real man is not ashamed to accept help when it is needed
A real man will fail to living up to being a real man, yet they shall never stop striving
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@ViciDraco Now THERE'S a term I hate... Toxic masculinity 🙄

There's no such thing, it's a propaganda term used by the far left in a misguided effort to enforce equality through a form of social homogenisation by painting traditional masculine traits in a negative light.
Valentine · M
@ViciDraco Follow up Q: why do you have to be male to do all these veritable things?
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Valentine I explained that they are for everyone in my original answer.

"Though these traits are stated as being what is applicable to Real Man, they are generally for everyone. The way I wrote them is more to co-opt a term typically used by toxic masculinity to emphasize what really should be respected from traditional male stereotypes."
pennynoodles · 56-60, F
