How to handle criticism? [I Need Advice]

I'm an emotional and sensitive person. I've always wanted people to like me and to feel valued. This leads me to my problem. I take criticism too personally when it comes to work. I let small comments ruin my whole day. I come down really hard on myself and I overthink what people say. Is there any tips when it comes to handling criticism? I know logically constructive criticism is needed but my emotions always take over me.

First and foremost you need to put the criticisms in context and perspective. That does not mean ignore them. It does mean to consider each one and personally decide which you want to own and which you don't. Your choices are...

a. Own all of them
b. Own none of them
c. Own some of them

By taking "ownership" you eliminate the emotion. By making the decision, you eliminate feeling attacked.

In future episodes we will explore the downside of never owning criticism and the risks of validating all criticism by taking ownership of what everyone tells you to do. Thanks for tuning in. Until next time...

By nature, I'm very similar. On this site I'm learning to separate cricism from someone who is being friendly but disagrees, from the other sort which I try to ignore and walk away from. One problem is I tend to make jokes but that's like walking through a minefield. So easy for the other to misunderstand. Being sensitive is a great quality though.
