Does anyone know a good place where I can learn more Eastern philosophies?

Living in the Western world, I feel like I've had such little opportunity to learn about the deep wellspring of wisdom present in at least historical India, China, & Japan. I have often tried to understand things from a Western standpoint, largely analyzing things, breaking them down, moving forward at incremental speed towards understanding, sometimes rejecting or being biased towards more spiritualistic thinking or quite different epistemologies than those present in the West.

I want to learn however I can, but I especially would love to learn from people who are wise & good teachers today who have an online presence!

If you are interested at all in engaging in this adventure with me as well, feel free to contact me.

A public library might be a good place. There, you can learn about Eastern philosophy, and the critique thereof, by Western philosophers such as Hegel; a translation of his comments on Eastern philosophy [translated into English] is here:

I think by this post you mean religions.

For Japan the largest religion is Shintoism. A lot of their emoji culture and anthropomorphization of trees and building comes from that religion--or is culturally adopted from it.

Between China and Japan their Taoism and Buddhism.

India is over 80 percent Hindu--which may amuse you but much of Christianity is blatantly plagiarized from their much older religion including their savior Krishna, trinity, virgin birth, 12 disciples ect. In that way they are not that different in how they approach religion then we are.

It is like Christianity or Islam- you would drown in it if you did any internet searches at all. You don't have to look high and low to find it.

@robertsnj And where do you stand in the midst of all these?
robertsnj · 56-60, M
@sree251 I don't find value in religion or belief in God. Shinto from cultural standpoint is interesting in the impact it has had on Japanese culture but I would rather spend time on other topics than squander on it on religion and God searching.

Thomas Merton can be a good guide, particularly his book "Zen and the Birds of Appetite". It can be heavy stuff at times but well worth any effort involved.

@SW-User One of my spiritual advisors also recommends Merton.

Visit any Buddhist monastery Hindu temple. They actually are in many states. They are not easy to find though. I do happen to know a few in California.

@Winterwanderer Here you go: universal unitarian is world wide! They even have a wicca branch which is how I know about them.

@sree251 Alcoholics are people too. He died back in the seventies. His recordings are quite interesting. I combine many sources such as Tolle, Borg, ... In the end I find that I can not really say I'm 100% any particular religion so I made up my own. So far it seems to be pretty accurate. I'll modify it as the need arises.

@Tastyfrzz Can you share what you made up?

We; and everything around us, are all just ripples in a sea of energy surrounded by a field that is interested in life but does not interfere with it
